Coates Family Newsletter for 2/4/22

Dear Coates Families,

February is Black History Month, and the theme for 2022 is "Black Health and Wellness." The Library of Congress details how Carter G. Woodson successfully advocated for the creation of a Negro History Week in 1925 to raise awareness of African Americans’ contributions to civilization and the celebration was expanded to a month in 1976. Coates students learn about many ways African Americans have shaped and experienced life in the US, this month and all year long.

Warm regards,

Mr. Paul Basdekis, Principal

Mrs. Jessica King & Mrs. Jenn Gray, Assistant Principals

2022-2023 Kindergarten Survey

We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2022, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2022, please complete this form and return it no later than February 11, 2022. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Coates families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2022-2023 school year. Please email the completed form to Amy Marney at We thank you in advance for returning the form no later than February 11, 2022.

2022-2023 School Year Calendar Approved

The 2022-23 school year calendar was approved at the January 27 School Board Meeting. This calendar focuses on instruction, and student and operational needs. The calendar is aligned with neighboring school districts and adds additional key observance days.

Most importantly, this calendar was developed with significant input from the FCPS community. Thank you to everyone who participated in the process through surveys, webinars, and participation in the feedback committee. This effort reflects the best effort of everyone the school calendar touches.

Some highlights include:

  • Monday, August 22 will be the first day of school.
  • Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Orthodox Good Friday, and Diwali will now be designated as student holidays. (Eid and Lunar New Year fall on a non-school day in 2022.)
  • Inclusion of Veterans Day as a student holiday and staff work day.

To find out more about next year’s school calendar, visit the FCPS website.
