  • January 27 – KJMS Virtual Curriculum Night for Rising 7th & 8th Graders (current 6th and 7th graders)

Happy Chilly Friday!

We hope everyone was able to log in easily yesterday, in what we can affectionately call the No-Show Snow day of 2022! It appears that our students were able to get into classes and the teachers were able to navigate Zoom (new for all of us this year) with only a few minor glitches! Thanks for the help you provided at home both then and as continued partners in your child’s education.

When the students return on Tuesday, it will be semester two already! Our friends in the counseling department would like to remind you of a few things. For students, please be sure to remind them to check SIS student view or parent view before they arrive at school Tuesday morning. Many students will have PE for a different period or perhaps with a different teacher. If they have semester electives, they will get new electives for the second semester. To make sure all students have the required classes and that classes are as balanced as possible, counselors are making a handful of schedule changes Friday and Monday. Therefore, be sure to check Monday evening for the latest schedule.

Please be aware that grades are not available for viewing in StudentVUE and ParentVUE during grade posting.  The grading window and report cards will be available to view in StudentVUE and ParentVUE starting at 6:00 AM on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

This coming week, we will have our Virtual KJMS Curriculum Night on Thursday, January 27 at 6:00 PM for our current 7th graders and our 6th graders coming up to us in the fall. Due to Zoom constraints, we have to change the format a bit. 7th graders should know the presentation will be focused primarily on how to select classes and electives class options. We plan to add informative videos to the school website to help families choose classes for next year. Later next week, we will send links and post all information on our website.

Thank you for your ongoing support as we follow FCPS’ expectations regarding masks. There are upcoming parent town halls hosted by FCPS leadership to answer questions you may have. I know that we are all hopeful that our recent spike in cases will soon be on the decline.

Proud Principal,

Tammy Silipigni

Mask Requirement

FCPS remains committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all of our staff and students. As was shared in a message to staff and the community earlier today, FCPS will continue to follow our current mask regulation – with no changes – when classes resume on Tuesday, January 25.

FCPS requires everyone, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask inside our buildings and on our school buses, except when alone in a room. This includes staff, students, and visitors.

Our layered prevention strategies, including universal mask wearing, help to keep COVID-19 transmission in our schools low and our classrooms open for learning. It is especially important to protect our most medically vulnerable students who deserve the same opportunity to safely access in-person instruction as their peers.

Attendance

If a student will be absent or arriving late to school, parents or guardians should always report the details of the absence to the school. Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is imperative that parents contact the attendance office (instead of, or in addition to, the teacher) when their child is absent so we can mark them correctly.

To report an absence, parents have these options:

  1. Use the link to our online attendance form (preferred method) from the main page of the Katherine Johnson website
  2. Call the attendance line at 703-934-2424 being sure to include the spelling of your student’s last name and reason for the absence.

If your student will be picked up early for an appointment:
Please send them to the front office in the morning with a note stating the time of the dismissal.
Students will be given a pass to leave class and meet parents in the office. Parents should come to entrance #1, to the main office, with a photo ID to pick up their student for early dismissals.

For more information on the attendance policies, please visit the KJMS Attendance page.
