Dear Floris Families,
Although this winter storm caused most impacts on the weekend, it appears there is plenty of winter weather still to come. We wanted to share the various options that could occur with inclement weather impacts. FCPS may announce a delayed opening, an early release, or Virtual Learning Inclement Weather days.
Two-Hour Delay
FCPS may announce a two-hour delayed opening. This would mean that all schools in FCPS would start two hours later than their regular bell schedule. At Floris, this would mean doors open at 11:00 and the tardy bell is at 11:15am. Floris dismissal remains at 4:00pm on those dates. Our lunch schedule will adjust to ensure all students are able to get lunch.
Two-Hour Early Release
If inclement weather begins while we are already at school, FCPS may announce a two-hour early release. This would mean that all schools in FCPS would dismiss two hours earlier than their regular bell schedule. At Floris, our dismissal would be at 2:00pm. Our lunch schedule will adjust to ensure all students are able to get lunch on those dates.
School Buildings Closed- Virtual Learning for Inclement Weather
Due to the cumulative learning loss of students during this pandemic and in order to maximize instructional time, FCPS will implement virtual learning for day 6 and beyond in which school buildings are closed due to inclement weather.
What to Expect on a Virtual Learning Inclement Weather Day
- Virtual learning will be synchronous or live, teacher-led instruction. However, teachers may prepare emergency asynchronous lessons that can be used if they have issues connecting due to power or other unforeseen circumstances.
- When there are weather related power outages, staff illnesses, or absences, we will communicate adjustments as quickly as possible. In these cases, students may be assigned asynchronous activities.
- Specials (Art, FLES, Library, Music, PE, and STEAM) will be asynchronous with activities posted in Schoology. Families may choose to access those activities at the time that works best for their day.
Schedule Information
- ALL Elementary Schools will follow the same bell schedule: 10:30am-3:15pm.
- At Floris, we will have schoolwide lunch 12:30-1:00pm and schoolwide recess 2:45pm-3:15pm.
- Your children’s teachers will share more specific information you need to prepare for success on an inclement weather virtual learning day.
- During each instructional block, teachers/staff will check in with students with a brief mini lesson, assign independent learning tasks, and be available for support.
- Virtual schedules and asynchronous choice boards for students in our Enhanced Autism classes will be communicated to families directly from the teachers.
Attendance
Attendance will be taken on each virtual learning inclement weather day. If your child has difficulty connecting, please notify the teacher, and if possible, have your child access asynchronous activities posted in Schoology at some point during the day. The absence will be excused. If your child will not be participating in virtual instruction, please email the teacher and complete the attendance form: https://florises.fcps.edu/attendance-or-change-transportation-form.
