CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

This week, we grieved with the McSween family as they laid to rest beloved father and husband Greg at Arlington National Cemetery. On behalf of Leanne, her three CWES sons (in grades 2, 4 and 6) and preschool daughter, I want to thank you all for lifting this family up as they process their unthinkable loss. You had brave conversations with your children about how sometimes daddies die far too young. And you taught your children how to be there for their friends during difficult times. Having lost my own father as a child, I know firsthand that your support has made all the difference. I am honored to lead such a special community.

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, Dr. L

Inclement Weather Virtual Learning Plans

We used all of our traditional snow days during last week’s snowstorms, so future inclement weather days will include virtual learning whenever possible. FCPS will announce a virtual learning day in the weather closure announcement on our website and social media channels and through email communications and local media.

There is the potential of winter weather early next week, so here is some information for you in the event that we have our first inclement weather virtual learning day.

CWES Inclement Weather Virtual Learning Day Schedule

In the left column below is the basic schedule for the virtual day at CWES. Each grade level's schedule departs slightly from this basic schedule to accommodate their specials block, noted in the right column below.

Language Arts and Math instructional blocks will include synchronous focus lessons and asynchronous independent practice activities, to break up screen time throughout the day.

Morning Meetings and Afternoon Gatherings give students a chance to socialize with teachers and classmates.

Attendance

Attendance will be taken in Morning Meeting. If your child has difficulty connecting, they should complete the asynchronous activities that are posted in Schoology and notify the teacher of the difficulty so the absence can be excused. If your child will not be participating in virtual instruction, please email their teacher and copy the attendance line at CanterburyWoodsElem.Attendance@fcps.edu

Technology Readiness and Support

Students access classroom Zoom links through Schoology. Specials for K-4 will be held in the same Zoom link as all classroom instruction. Links for specials in grades 5 and 6 will be posted in Schoology.

Students reviewed logging into Schoology and Zoom in school this week. Here are steps students can take at home to ensure they are prepared.

  1. Log onto your laptop with your student ID and password.
  2. Connect your laptop to your internet connection.
  3. Login to Google account.  In the Chrome browser, go to www.fcpsschools.net, sign in with your fcpsschools.net account.
  4. Log into Schoology. Make sure you can access your classroom.
  5. If you have any issues with these steps from home, go to the Tech Support for Families page, to submit a ticket for support.

SPECIAL OF THE MONTH: P.E.

Each month, we will feature one of our specials programs so you can learn a bit more about these amazing elements of your child's school experience.

What’s been happening in P.E. class?

Our Canterbury Cougars are having a blast doing the gymnastics unit for the first time in two years!  Students learn a variety of gymnastic skills with a strong focus on balances, jumps, rolls, and weight transfers.  It is a joy for Mr. Healey and Mrs. T to watch the students at stations doing balance beam challenges, bouncing on the springboard, and performing some super cool jumps off the vault!

PE1

In the first and second quarters, students from Kinder-6th worked on skills and activities that included:

Kinder:

- Demonstrating two critical elements used in underhand tossing and throwing to targets. (Bowling)

- Demonstrating two critical elements of toss and catch. (Juggling)

1st:

- Demonstrating and distinguishing between galloping, leaping, skipping, and sliding. (Locomotor Skills)

- Demonstrating transfer of weight from feet to hands. (Gymnastics Weight Transfers)

2nd:

- Demonstrating mature forms of stationary hand dribbling. (Basketball Handling)

- Demonstrating an educational gymnastics sequence, including balance, roll, transfer of weight from feet to hands, and flight. (Gymnastics Vault Sequences)

3rd:

- Demonstrating the critical elements for passing a ball to a moving partner. (Basketball Chest & Bounce Pass)

- Demonstrating the critical elements for dribbling for the dominant hand. (Finger pads, Waist high)

4th:

- Demonstrating mature form of catching thrown objects in game and modified sports activities. (Flag Football)

- Demonstrating the ability to self-pace in a cardiovascular endurance activity. (PACER Test)

5th:

- Calculating resting heart rate and calculating heart rate during a variety of activities. (Functional Fitness Challenges)

- Demonstrating mature form of execution to a target through throwing, kicking, or striking in a complex and dynamic activity and modified sports game. (Football Pass and Receive)

6th:

- Describing and demonstrating basic offensive strategies in non-complex, modified, and small-sided activities such as creating open spaces, speed, and accuracy. (Line Basketball)

- Describing the relationship between resting heart rate and exercise intensity. (Jumping Jack Challenge)

PE3

We are both excited to start the new year with some jump rope skills and tricks! Students will learn to demonstrate the self-turn rope sequence for multiple types of jumps. Be sure to have your student(s) show them to you at home with or without a jump rope:)

PE2

Moving forward from there, we will begin to hit some kid-favorite units that we unfortunately were unable to do at the end of the 2019-20 school year.  That means be ready to find out about our soccer unit, where students will control, stop, and kick a soccer ball to teammates.  Hopefully they will even score a goal!  And of course the baseball unit, where students will learn the correct grip on a bat combined with the rotation of the body to hit a homerun!

Have a wonderful start to the new year!

Sincerely,

Mr. Healey and Mrs. T
