January 27th - 6:00-8:00pm
Get ready for the 2022-23 School Year by attending the Virtual KJMS Curriculum Night! Staff will host info sessions about all of the classes you can take at KJMS. This event is geared towards students and families that will be in the 7th grade next year, but future 8th graders are welcome too. There will be information sessions for core 7th grade classes and for 7th and 8th grade elective classes. Links for all sessions will go live and be emailed and posted on the school’s website on January 27 no later than 3:00pm. Families are encouraged to attend the sessions they are curious about to help them choose classes for next year.
Consider looking at the Course Catalog (links listed below) before Curriculum Night to see a full list of classes that are being offered.

Return Guidance for
Students who are Close Contacts to Community Related Exposures
NEW! FCPS will no longer require Return to School documentation for a student deemed a close contact in the community, outside of the school environment. FCPS recommends that families adhere to the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) quarantine guidance, as appropriate. If families have questions regarding COVID-19, they are encouraged to consult their physician or the Fairfax County Health Department.
Close contact is:
- Being within 6 feet of a person who has COVID-19 for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period, beginning two days before symptoms developed or two days before taking a COVID-19 test, if asymptomatic.
- Having direct exposure to respiratory secretions from a person who has COVID-19. For example, being coughed or sneezed on, sharing a drinking glass or utensils, or kissing.
- Providing care for a person who has COVID-19
- Living with a person who has COVID-19.
Day 1 to 5
- Stay home and away from others.
- Test on day 5, if possible. If you test positive for COVID-19, follow the isolation guidance above.
Day 6 to 10
- Continue to wear a well-fitting mask around others.
- If you develop symptoms get a test and stay home. If you test positive for COVID-19, follow the isolation guidance above.
Attendance
If a student will be absent or arriving late to school, parents or guardians should always report the details of the absence to the school. Teachers do not have access to mark a student excused for an absence, which is why it is imperative that parents contact the attendance office (instead of, or in addition to, the teacher) when their child is absent so we can mark them correctly.
To report an absence, parents have these options:
- Use the link to our online attendance form (preferred method) from the main page of the Katherine Johnson website
- Call the attendance line at 703-934-2424 being sure to include the spelling of your student’s last name and reason for the absence.
If your student will be picked up early for an appointment: Please send them to the front office in the morning with a note stating the time of the dismissal. Students will be given a pass to leave class and meet parents in the office. Parents should come to entrance #1, to the main office, with a photo ID to pick up their student for early dismissals.
For more information on the attendance policies, please visit the KJMS Attendance page.
