The Admission Game, Weds Feb. 9th, 6:00pm
Do you ever wonder who “gets in” and “why?” “The Admission Game” answers these questions by taking you inside the admission process. TAG is a high-energy, high-impact, interactive case study exercise for students and parents in which the audience is transformed into an admission committee. Through more theatre than lecture, Peter teaches the audience by using and explaining relevant terms that help ease the stress of an otherwise frenzied process. This signature program reveals the “hidden agendas” of colleges and provides insight into how decisions are made, which helps students learn to find the colleges that fit them best and make decisions that help them compete for admission.
40-year veteran of the college admission process, Peter Van Buskirk is dedicated to helping families find student-centered solutions in college planning. His ability to interpret and personalize a complex, and often mysterious, college-going process makes him a popular speaker among students, parents and educators. His creative programming has informed, inspired and entertained more than 2,000 audiences around the world. Peter moved through the ranks at Franklin & Marshall College to become Dean of Admission, Interim Director of Athletics, Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management, and Executive Officer in the Office of the Provost. He subsequently created and now operates Best College Fit® as a platform for delivering student-centered college planning content to students, parents and educators. In addition, Peter convenes a national, annual think-tank meeting of deans of admission and veteran college advisors and assess recent developments and future trends in the college-going process.

Vision, Mission and Values - Your input is needed
Every 5-10 years, schools and organizations need to re-evaluate their vision, mission and values to ensure they still reflect who they are. In 2015, the Woodson community adopted this current Vision, Mission and Values:
Vision Statement
We are a school community where all students matter.
Mission Statement
To foster a culture of success by developing the academic, social, and emotional potential of all students.
Values
Our values guide us in the pursuit of our mission:
- Empowerment – We encourage students to discover their passions and make the right choices to develop their own path.
- Trust – We believe in each other and assume positive intentions.
- Honesty – We are committed to the truth.
- Collaboration – We are stronger as a group than as individuals.
- Diversity – We respect and appreciate the uniqueness of each individual.
- Resiliency – We recognize that perseverance and hope are key to a fulfilling life.
This year we are inviting the Woodson community to share input based on YOUR ideas for Woodson High School's new Vision, Mission and Values.
Some things to think about as you answer include: Where do you want to see Woodson HS in 5 years? How do we get there? What are our fundamental beliefs of who we are? Please complete this Google Form to share your ideas.
Virginia School Survey in February
This spring our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions of students, classroom instructors, and staff. The purpose of this survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and supportive school environment.
The online survey will be administered to all students grades 9-12, on Friday, February 4th, 2022 during 3rd period. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous (no one will know how your child answered the survey). Parents and guardians will not have access to their child’s survey answers. You may review the student survey at this website: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurvey.
The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, and their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them. Students will also be asked what kinds of bullying they may have observed during school and whether they have been bullied themselves.
Students participating in remote instruction and in-person instruction are both eligible to participate. The survey is voluntary and your child can decide not to participate. No action will be taken against you, your child, or the school if your child does not participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify the school office by email to jtobrien1@fcps.edu by Monday, January 31st.
Your child will not receive any immediate benefit from participating in the survey, but the survey will help us to maintain a safe, inviting, and supportive learning environment for your child.
Take the FCPS Superintendent Search Survey
The Fairfax County School Board is committed to hiring the best possible candidate for FCPS’ next superintendent. With that in mind, the Board has contracted a search firm to conduct a national search for the new superintendent. Your voice is an important part of this effort! Please weigh in by participating in the Superintendent Search Survey today. The survey allows FCPS parents/guardians, staff, high school students, and community members to share their thoughts on the leadership characteristics and qualities of the next superintendent. Information gathered through the survey, focus groups, and upcoming town halls will help inform the selection of FCPS’ new superintendent.
Please check your email for a survey link from K12 Insight (survey administrator), which was sent on January 4. High school students received their survey invitation on January 5, via their FCPSSchools.net email accounts. If you are an FCPS community member and would like to take the survey, please visit FCPS’ Superintendent Search page for the community member survey link. Thanks in advance for your participation in this important process.

WTW CAVS SPORTS UPDATES
Follow @Woodsonathletic on Twitter for current athletic updates and schedules.
Cavs Varsity Fall Sports
Girls Basketball
The Woodson girl's freshman basketball team hot start continues!
Led by captains Sarah Narragon and Emily Williams, as well as leading center Valli Swaminathan, the team remained undefeated and improved to 6-0 by going 3-0 last week with wins over South County 36-18, Lake Braddock 36-23, and Alexandria City 37-14.
This week they will face their toughest competition to date, with games at West Potomac (Tuesday) and at Robinson (Friday).
Swim & Dive
On Friday, Woodson faced Alexandria City HS in a dual meet at the Mt Vernon Rec Center. The girls won 223-91, and the boys finished out in front, 234-72.
All 3 boys relays – the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free and 400 Free Relays – were really close and exciting wins for Woodson!
Woodson’s record is now 5-1 for both the girls and boys in the Patriot District.
Woodson is looking forward to the last dual meet of the regular season, which is also Senior Night! It’s this Friday, 1/21 against West Potomac at the Mt Vernon Rec Center.
Ice Hockey Club
The Woodson Ice Hockey team did not have a game this past Friday, but earlier in the month the club did host its annual alumni game. The game was a huge success that had to be decided in a shootout with the alumni team pulling out a 7 to 6 win. This week the team has two games. First, on Wednesday night the team will play South County and then on Friday night take on Forest Park/Hylton. The game on Friday night is Senior Night where the four seniors will be recognized for their contributions to the Woodson Ice Hockey Club. Puck drop on Wednesday is at 7:15 pm and on Friday night it is at 8:15 pm. Both games are at the Mount Vernon Ice Rink which is located at 2017 Belle View Blvd, Alexandria. Please come out and support the team. Admission is free and face masks are required by spectators.
Also, the WIHC needs your help. Woodson is in the finals for the best fans against Briar Woods. Hockey Night in Northern Virginia is hosting the competition and the vote is open from 8:30 pm January 16th through 8:30 pm January 18th, so please go to the Hockey Night in NOVA Instagram site and help Woodson bring home the championship! See details below.

In order for the physical to be accepted for the 2021-2022 school year, it cannot be filled out and dated by a doctor until May 1, 2021 or after. COVID OPERATIONS UPDATE
Updates to Quarantine/Isolation Guidance
Effective as of Monday, January 10, 2022. The information provided below provides a summary of the updates. Please reference the FCPS Health and Safety Guidance for additional details.
New Guidance for Returning to School After Quarantine, Pause, or Isolation
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance for isolation and quarantine in late December, with multiple updates in January. This guidance reduces isolation and quarantine to five days. The VDH states that school districts may choose to continue more stringent isolation and quarantine requirements or may implement the new CDC guidance.
FCPS will adopt the new guidance with one exception:
- FCPS will adopt CDC’s recommendation for a five-day period of quarantine for students and staff.
- FCPS will adopt CDC’s recommendation for a five-day period of isolation for staff.
- FCPS will NOT adopt CDC’s recommendation for isolation for students as we are unable to implement the required physical distancing protocols during meals. FCPS students with COVID- 19 will need to continue to complete a ten day isolation period.
Return Guidance for Students with COVID-19
Students who are COVID-19 positive are able to return to school when ALL of the following criteria are met:
- Student completes at least 10 days of isolation from symptom onset for symptomatic students or 10 days since testing positive (day test administered) for COVID-19 for asymptomatic students; AND
- Student is fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND
- Student’s symptoms have improved; AND
- Student submits the FCPS Isolation Letter with the return date to their attending school
Return Guidance for Students who are Close Contacts to School Related Exposures
Asymptomatic students who are close contacts and required to quarantine are able to return to school when all the criteria for one of the two options below is met:
- Option 1:
- Student completes five days of quarantine; AND
- Student is asymptomatic; AND
- Student is able to wear a face mask at school- Day 6 thru 10 ; AND
- Student submits FCPS Pause Letter with the return date to their attending school
- Option 2:
- Student completes ten days of quarantine; AND
- Student submits FCPS Pause Letter with the return date to their attending school
-
Students with mask exemptions will need to utilize Option 2 to return from quarantine.
Some students and staff may be exempt from quarantine if they meet the CDC criteria, are able to wear a face mask, and are asymptomatic:
- Students must complete the FCHD vaccination survey, and receive a clearance email from the FCHD prior to resuming in-person learning and activities.
- Staff must complete the Fully Vaccinated Exemption Form
Return Guidance for Students who are Close Contacts to Community Related Exposures
NEW! FCPS will no longer require Return to School documentation for a student deemed a close contact in the community, outside of the school environment. FCPS recommends that families adhere to the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) quarantine guidance, as appropriate. If families have questions regarding COVID-19, they are encouraged to consult their physician or the Fairfax County Health Department.
Updated Health and Safety Guidance Documents
The best source of the most up-to-date information, including how students return to school after quarantine or isolation, is available on the Health and Safety Guidance Document on the FCPS website.
FCPS staff should refer to resources on the Employee Hub for updated guidelines to return to work.
Voluntary Student COVID Screening
FCPS is offering voluntary COVID screening testing for unvaccinated students. The portal to register is now open.
This optional, random, student screening / testing is available for students who are NOT vaccinated against COVID19. This is a mitigation strategy to prevent the spread of COVID19 by identifying possible positive cases.
If you wish to sign your student up for this optional program, parents/guardians will need to preregister and provide consent for services in the LTS online registration portal prior to service delivery. If your student is already vaccinated you may disregard this message.
LTS is the contracted vendor for FCPS student testing. Woodson HS was assigned the testing time of Fridays from 12-3pm. LTS will randomly choose up to 10% of our population, from only those who have agreed to be tested.
Once identified, we will send a pass for those students at a designated time between 12-3pm on Fridays and they will go to the testing location at Woodson. Testing should only take a few minutes. Testing may not be the same time each Friday and the day of the week could possibly change. Students will be missing class to be tested. We are working with an outside vendor, so we cannot commit to having any ability to alter testing times.
Results are uploaded to the same system where you registered your child for this program. Only administrators will have access to this information at Woodson High School.
Have problems registering? LTS Contact information for IT support/registration support: fcps@lts.com (NOT affiliated with FCPS and FCPS cannot assist with this process as technical support)
Unvaccinated Athletes COVID Testing
All high school student-athletes participating in FCPS athletic programming who are not fully vaccinated between the ages of 12-15 or between the ages of 16-18 with a medical or religious exemption will be required to submit negative COVID-19 test results to the Director of Student Activities at the school on a weekly basis in order to participate in sports for school year 2021-2022.
