 Dear Mustang Families-
On behalf of the entire SCMS faculty and staff, I wish all of you Happy Holidays and a restful winter break! We earned these two weeks! Use them wisely- read books, play games, binge television shows, spend time with family and loved ones. We look forward to greeting all our Mustangs on January 3 (Blue Day).
This week, at our faculty meeting we recognized each of the nominees, announced the school-based winners for each of the FCPS Excellence Awards. Please help these marvelous mustangs move onto the next level of the competition by providing feedback. Please use the following links to share a story that will help us complete their nominations. Celebrations in our Community:
Christmas is a Christian holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. Celebrated each year on December 25th, it is one of the most important days of the year for Christians. It is celebrated all over the world, either as a religious holiday or as a time of celebration by both Christians and non-Christians. The traditions are different from country to country, but they nearly always include a feast, giving gifts or cards, attending church services, and enjoying traditions such as decorating the home and singing Christmas carols. Santa Claus is a tradition in many countries of the world.
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held in the United States to honor African heritage and culture. People light a kinara (candle holder with seven candles) and give each other gifts. Taking place from December 26 to January 1 every year, it was first celebrated in 1966 and was created as a way to help African Americans reconnect with their African cultural and historical heritage. The name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili matunda ya kwanza, meaning first fruits of the harvest. Many Christian African Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa do so in addition to observing Christmas.
Holidays are wonderful, but they may also be difficult for some people.
Here are some available resources that can be helpful in keeping our
Mustangs safe during the Winter Break.

Leadership Course for 8th Graders
Applications for the Leadership Course at South County High School will be open from December 10th until January 7th. Students in this course learn about leadership skills and help plan activities for the school. Applications require teacher recommendations and an interview. Students may find the link to the application in their Team course on Schoology.
