Congratulations to Kay O'Banner and Welcome, Emily Johnson!
Our band director, Kay O’Banner, will be retiring at the end of this month. We thank Kay for her contributions to instrumental music that she has provided to our Cubbies and wish her well on this new chapter in her life! We welcome our new band director, Emily Johnson, who starts this week!

Welcome to our New Student Information Assistant, Doris Velez!
Doris Velez joined out front office team on Monday, December 13th! We are excited to welcome her to the Cub Run front office team. Doris first came to Cub Run as a parent when her son (now at Westfield HS), was registered for Kindergarten (by Mr. Carlos!). She still remembers the warm welcome she and her son received, and she is looking forward to welcoming new families to Cub Run in the future! Doris has worked at Coates ES as an Office Assistant for the past 4 years. She loves coffee, ice cream, and the New York Yankees. She can’t wait to meet everyone and become a part of the amazing Cub Run family!

Hooray for our PTA!
Cub Run staff loved the hot chocolate and cookie bar that our wonderful PTA volunteers set up in the staff lounge! Cub Run families have already been sending in donations of coffee pods, tea, and other goodies to keep our staff lounge well-stocked over the last several weeks, and today's goodies were such a treat! Thank you, families!

Mindfulness
The act of mindfulness can decrease stress, improve sleep, and increase joy. Take some time to practice mindful habits with your children over the winter break. Here are some tips: practice setting appropriate boundaries, create gratitude lists, listen to intuition, tell your truth, and practice deep breathing skills! Although the winter break is a great time to have your family practice mindfulness, these habits are useful for changing ones mindset all year-round.
Some Students May Now Return from Quarantine After Seven Days
CDC guidance allows for a reduction of the student quarantine period to seven days “when diagnostic testing resources are sufficient and available.” With FCPS now offering drive-through diagnostic testing at six sites across the county, in addition to the many alternative ways to access COVID-19 testing, FCPS is now providing the option for students who have been exposed to COVID-19 to return to school and in-person activities after seven days.
If your child is quarantined due to exposure at school, please keep them at home until one of the following quarantine periods is met:
- Seven days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide both: a negative COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen or PCR) taken on day five of quarantine or later, as well as a copy of the FCPS pause letter indicating the return to school dates; or
- 10 days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide a copy of the FCPS pause letter indicating the return to school dates; or
- 14 days of quarantine and you provide a copy of the clearance letter (SARA-Alert) from the health department.
If your child is quarantined due to exposure outside of the school, please contact the school as soon as possible and you will receive a Return Letter for Exposures Outside of FCPS. The timeline for quarantine return begins when you alert the school. Keep your child at home until one of the following quarantine periods is met.
- Seven days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide both: a negative COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen or PCR) taken on day five of quarantine or later, as well as a copy of the Return Letter for Exposures Outside of FCPS indicating the return to school dates; or
- 10 days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide a copy of the Return Letter for Exposures Outside of FCPS indicating the return to school dates (you must contact your school to request the letter at the beginning of the quarantine period); or
- 14 days of quarantine and you provide a copy of the clearance letter (SARA-Alert) from the health department.
The above options only apply to a student returning to in-person learning and school-sponsored activities. Other organizations, such as SACC, may have different requirements for return.
We continue to balance the need for students to have a high-quality in-person learning experience with student and staff safety. By adhering to our layered prevention strategies and increasing vaccination rates, we are all doing our part to keep schools safe.
Common Sense Media Changes
Common Sense Media has made a change that only allows you to access 3 free Reviews, and then you have options to sign up for their Plus service at $3 a month or $30 per year. In order for families to continue to be able to access the reviews for free, follow these instructions:
On this page underneath the two big subscription price boxes, there is a line that says "Can't make a donation right now but still want Plus? Let us know." Parents can click on "Let us know," and it will take them to an option to request access for free month-by-month access as needed.
Showing Up Matters!
“Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after winter break. It’s time to break that cycle. Give your child the gift of attendance and help build a habit of attendance. Make sure your child is in school every day, right up until vacation starts. Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning. But it’s harder to teach and it’s harder to learn when too many students are absent. This year, Winter Break is December 20-31st. We hope to see all our students in school through December 17th and return to school on January 3rd.”
SCA Spirit Day - Comfy Cozy Day
As the weather is getting cooler outside and winter is upon us, the SCA will be hosting a spirit day: Comfy Cozy Day this Friday, December 17. Wear your favorite PJs, Sweats, Sweater, Sweatsuit to school for our last day together before the Winter Break and the New Year!
Human Growth and Development
During the week of December 13 - December 17 students in grades 4-6 will complete the Human Growth and Development lesson(s). Below is the schedule:
This LINK is the recorded family preview from November 18th.
First Grade Food Drive
First grade is organizing a food drive to support our Cub Run family resource center that is in the process of being created by Lilith and the school climate committee. Our students have been learning about ways to contribute to their community and needs/wants so this is an opportunity that is directly related to their learning!
We will be collecting canned goods, dry goods, non-perishable food, toiletries, diapers and wipes. There will be donation boxes labeled and placed in each POD for students to drop off their donations. These donations will directly benefit Cub Run families! We will be collecting donations from 11/29-12/17.
