Bonnie Brae ES Updates December 16

Principals' Message

Dear Bonnie Brae School Community,

It has been my pleasure to serve as the Interim Principal of Bonnie Brae these past few months. It’s been my good fortune to experience the wonderful Bonnie Brae spirit shared by the students, staff, and families. Bonnie Brae has a terrific staff and is fortunate to have the support of a wonderful PTA and parents who truly are partners and their child’s education. I will reenter “semi-retirement” and continue consulting with schools across the U.S.  As you already know, Mr. Morgan Birge, will become Bonnie Brae’s new principal on January 3, 2022. I know he is excited to work with all of you and getting to know each of you.  He’ll benefit greatly from your positive support and active participation.

While we didn’t totally escape the challenges that COVID presented as the we began the school year, I believe we are on a good path moving into the new year.

I am hopeful that the coming months of ’22 will see an increase in the amount of after school activities we are able to host, both for our students and our school community.  Fingers crossed 😊

Thank you once again for the opportunity to be a Scottie, if even for a few months.  I look forward to hearing about all the wonderful things that Bonnie Brae is accomplishing in the future. Please enjoy a restful winter break!

All the best,

Dwayne

Welcome, Principal Birge!

Bonnie Brae is excited to welcome Morgan Birge as our new principal starting January 3, 2022. Please join us in extending Morgan a warm welcome!

Mr. Birge is a proud product of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), growing up in the Springfield area and graduating from Lake Braddock Secondary School. He spent the first fourteen years of his educational career as a physical education teacher in FCPS. He also served as a resource teacher in the Instructional Services Department, where he helped usher in the county’s standards-based progress reports. Mr. Birge transitioned back to a school-based position when he became the instructional coach at Lemon Road Elementary School. He went on to serve as the assistant principal at Garfield Elementary School and returned to Lemon Road, where he has been serving as the assistant principal for the past five and a half years.

COVID Weekly Update

Every week, we will provide an update on our COVID-19 status to keep you informed. Parents interested in following the daily case reporting can refer to the COVID-19 Dashboard on the FCPS website. If you have any questions about how we are staying safe so we can keep learning in person, please contact the BBES office at 703-321-3900.

Bonnie Brae reports 1 positive COVID-19 case this week. 1 is a student and 0 are staff.

4 students and staff will be learning and teaching remotely while in a pause, quarantine, or isolation.

Remember, do your part to keep our school safe: Wear your mask, get vaccinated if you are eligible, practice healthy hygiene, and stay home when you are sick.

Positivity Project

Positivity Project

We continue to work to empower students to build positive relationships through the Positivity Project. For the next week, the focus will be on Optimism.

You expect the best from the future and hope to achieve it.

“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear any hardship today.” -Thich Nhat Hanh

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

This year K-12 students in FCPS are participating in a Social-Emotional Learning Screener. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions (CASEL, 2020). You can find more information about the screener and the importance of social-emotional learning here. This screener will be a useful tool for us here at Bonnie Brae to learn how to best support our students and school community.

Students in grades 3-6 took the screener in the fall window and students in K-2 will take in the winter window.

If you choose to opt your child out of the SEL Screener, please return the opt-out form no later than January 14th. The form only needs to be returned if you DO NOT want your child to participate in the SEL screener. If applicable, please print and return to school or send via email to Jenny Martinez at jrmartinez@fcps.edu
