From all of us at Powell, please accept our warmest wishes for a healthy and relaxing winter break. It is my hope that all of our students and staff will set aside their laptops and schoolwork and settle into enjoying family and friends for the next two weeks. Taking the time to recharge is important for everyone’s mental health, and our students and staff are top of mind for me in this regard.
It’s hard to believe that it will be 2022 when we return to school! I am confident that we have a lot to look forward to in the year ahead!

Yearbook Cover Design Contest: Calling all artists! Submit your artwork for the Yearbook Contest to an art teacher by 1/5/22! The winner’s artwork will be featured on the front cover of the Yearbook! Runners-up for each grade will be featured on the back of the yearbook! Yearbook Cover Design Contest Rules:
- Artwork must be made on 8 1/2” x 11” paper (unlined)
- Design must be vertical (portrait orientation)
- Design must include
- Yearbook theme: Honoring the Legacy of General Powell
- School name: Colin Powell Elementary School
- School year: 2021-2022
- For best results, make your art with crayons, paint, collages, and marker (no glitter or pencil please)

These tools are provided by Lightspeed, our internet content filtering service, at no cost to families. You may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. If you want more detailed information, sign up for the Internet Use Parent portal and log-in anytime to see more detail about your child’s browsing and “pause” access to the internet during non-school hours. The PTA needs YOU!. Remember ALL membership fees go toward school-wide opportunities for students, teachers, and families. This includes support for a diverse opportunities for after school programs. Without your membership and/or participation, we will cannot bring school-wide opportunities to the students. See below on how to join Today!
Volunteer Opportunities Available
VP of Ways and Means (Second Vice President) still needed: The primary function of this position it to be creative and oversee / organize fund raising activates. If not already aware, most of the awesome events that we are able to have for our student, such as the spring ball, come from our success at fundraising. Because of this, the VP of Ways and Means is a crucial position to be filled. It’s probably the most fun too.
As a PTA Board Member, you will not only be supporting your own child’s education, but that of all of our children, as well as the Powell community. Moreover, you will be a vital part of the ongoing discussion with the district level administration about what is happening in our school, and will help to implement new plans and goals set forth by FCPS.
