Cardinal's Message

Dear Cunningham Park Families and Friends,

To support student and staff wellness and allow for all to have a restful winter break, teachers will not issue homework that students must complete over break. Specifically, homework or projects will not be due on the two school days following this extended break. This does not preclude teachers from assigning long-range assignments in the weeks before a break and tasking students to use their own time management skills to determine if they need to work during their holiday.

We hope you have a fabulous weekend!

SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Corner

Winter Break is just a week away and that means lots of quality family time!  Here are some great conversation tips/ reminders to practice over the break because talking to your child about social and emotional issues is important!

  • Ask open-ended, positive questions instead of questions that can be answered with yes or no.
  • Ask questions about times when your child socializes with other kids, like lunch and recess.
  • Tell your child when you notice that something is bothering or upsetting them.
  • Isolate the area of difficulty and name it in order to give your child a sense of control over the situation.
  • Emphasize that your child is not the only person who may struggle in this area.
  • Balance the negative and positive and reassure your child that you are available to help.
  • Be specific about inappropriate behavior.
  • Don’t be dismissive – it may be a big deal to your child.
  • The car is a great place to start a conversation. Your child does not have to make eye contact with you.
  • Carve out special one-on-one time at least once a month to share an interest and get some quality time.

Positivity Project

Positivity Project

Our Positivity Project trait this week is self-control.  People with self-control understand that there are great things we can accomplish through discipline and restraint. Self-control is a key factor in determining success as an adult.  As 21st century citizens, we need to be role models for our students and be mindful of the technology in which we are immersed.  We need to understand that self-control is a crucial trait to possess and knowing when to turn it off is invaluable to long-term success in life.

Try this at home:  For older students:  Have a discussion with your child about digital impulses (clicking on junk articles, scrolling on social media or posting things just for likes).  Talk about ways you use self-control with technology and how it is important to turn technology off and interact with people face to face.

For younger students: Talk about something you don’t like to do that you have to do.  Discuss with your child why you “make” yourself do it and the benefits you receive from it later.  Relate this to an experience in your child’s life.  When do they have to do something that they don’t want to that will benefit them later in life?

Quote of the Week:  “You have power over your mind – not outside events.  Realize this, and you will find strength.”  -MARCUS AURELIUS

Winter Coats in Lost and Found

With the weather getting colder, we have begun to collect some winter coats that were left on the playground.  If your child has lost a coat recently, please encourage them to stop by the lost and found, which is located in the cafeteria.
