There will be no homework over break and no major assignments two days after we return. We want all our FCPS families, staff and students to enjoy this winter break.

Principal's Message

I hope everyone has planned a bit of fun with family over the winter holiday break. I am looking forward to the next two weeks, as are many of our staff, to disconnect and give ourselves some time to relax and renew. Our front office will be closed from December 20th - December 31st. I am also planning to step away the majority of this break. We look forward to having our students return on January 3rd.

The past couple of weeks we kicked off a new Student Ambassadors Program at Chesterbrook.  This program will replace the old style of SCA where very few students could become leaders in our school.  As a principal, I envision a school full of opportunities with endless bounds where our students have voice and choice in what will help us become the most welcoming environment to learn and grow.  We presently have over 80 fifth and sixth grade students that have taken the initiative to become Chesterbrook Ambassadors.  We had our first leadership training this last week where we discussed four goals of student leader development: Developing Strengths, Achieving Goals, Actively Contributing and Continuously Improving. Students shared projects that they feel would benefit Chesterbrook or the greater community and shared their strengths with each other. I am thrilled about what I already see from these young leaders and am so hopeful about the positive impact they will make across our community.

Last week, we held our December PTA Meeting and here are a few updates:

1- Quarantine - Reduced to 7 days for close contacts (if negative testing after day 5 and no symptoms or FCHD may approve immediate return of fully vaccinated students)

2- School Improvement Plan and Federal Funding Plan to support plans - Money has been obtained from the grant to support school improvement. Chesterbrook goals were shared at the meeting.

3- Student Ambassador Update - included in letter above

Thank you for your tremendous support so far this school year. I wish you all a wonderful and joyful winter break and Merry Christmas to all who celebrate.

Sincerely,

Stacy Kirkpatrick

Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night at Longfellow

Longfellow Middle School is excited to invite you to the Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night on Tuesday, January 11 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. This night will be full of information about Longfellow and the transition to middle school. Our core and elective teachers will highlight their exciting classes. There will be students and staff members to answer any questions you might have. If you have any questions that you hope to get answered at the event, please take time to complete this form. The inclement weather date is Wednesday, January 12 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm.

Covid Vaccinations

It is important to file your child's Covid vaccination record with the school.  Once students are two weeks out of their 2nd shot, the return to school process is quicker in getting them returned to the classroom should they be paused as a close contact of a positive Covid case.

Once your child has received both doses of the vaccine, please send record of vaccination to Dave Troskey (datroskey@fcps.edu).  He will update the information in SIS and file it in the student's health file. This will help us support students as we complete contact tracing and work with the health department.

Drive Through Testing Sites

Starting this week, students may obtain COVID-19 diagnostic testing at six drive-through sites in Fairfax County. Diagnostic testing is provided for anyone who has symptoms or is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing helps us reduce the virus’ spread and keep our schools safe places for all students to learn.

Appointments are not required for diagnostic testing but families must register in the secure online portal.

Please note:  When you register and provide consent for your child to be tested, they will also be added to Chesterbrook's screening testing pool. If you do not wish for them to be part of the weekly screening testing pool, simply log back into the online portal after your child’s test is complete and withdraw consent.

More information about diagnostic and screening testing, including site locations and schedules, is available on this website
