Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

We were so excited to have one of our beloved Stenwood traditions this morning, the Battle of the Books!  A special thank you to Mrs. Cole as the master organizer, book selector, and Battle Question writer.  Mrs. Roth, the MC extraordinaire, and Mrs. Krum and her Photo Bees who pulled off all of the technical parts.  The recording can be found on our Stenwood Schoology site.  Congratulations to Mr. Zirkle’s Class, Mrs. Menon’s Class, and Mrs. Shepherd’s Class -  our THREE Battle winners!

Parent Liaison

We are so pleased to introduce Maria Agha as our new Family Liaison at Stenwood. This is a new position for us at our school. Family liaisons work in the schools and community to help families get the information and assistance they need to support their children and to ensure their academic success. Family liaisons will welcome and orient families who are new to the school and community, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices.

They can also help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family involvement to help ensure their student's success.  Please feel free to reach out to Maria Agha for assistance (magha@fcps.edu).

With the cold weather here, please let us know if your child is in need of a warm winter coat. Please reach out to the office or our school counselors, Anoma Hapangama (ashapangama@fcps.edu) and Tammy Berick (tsberick@fcps.edu) with your needs, as we hope to assist you.

Advanced Academic Programs - Deadline 12/15

*DUE WEDNESDAY*

Level IV AAP Referrals for students in grades 2-6 for placement in the 2022-2023 school year are due no later than December 15, 2021. Referrals can be submitted to the office or electronically emailed to Kaleigh Hartman kkhartman@fcps.edu, Erica Riley esriley@fcps.edu, and Meredith Mitchell mamitchell@fcps.edu any time between now and December 15th. If submitted electronically, you will receive an email confirmation from Mrs. Riley or Dr. Mitchell within 48 business hours. Contact us if you have not received a confirmation. No late referrals can be accepted.

Level IV Referral Form and Parent/Guardian Questionnaire can be found here.

  • Parents may submit up to 2 – 8.5 x 11 single sided pages of work samples. It is recommended that parents write a brief description on the sample.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April.

4th-6th Grade FLE Lessons -

Updated Quarantine Guidelines

Quarantine Following Exposure at School

If your child is quarantined due to exposure at school, please keep them at home until one of the following quarantine periods is met:

  • Seven days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide both: a negative COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen or PCR) taken on day five of quarantine or later, as well as a copy of the FCPS pause letter indicating the return to school dates; or

The above options only apply to a student returning to in-person learning and school-sponsored activities. Other organizations, such as SACC, may have different requirements for return.

Quarantine Following Exposure Outside of School

If your child is quarantined due to exposure outside of the school, please contact the school as soon as possible and you will receive a Return Letter for Exposures Outside of FCPS. The timeline for quarantine return begins when you alert the school. Keep your child at home until one of the following quarantine periods is met

  • Seven days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide both: a negative COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen or PCR) taken on day five of quarantine or later, as well as a copy of the Return Letter for Exposures Outside of FCPS indicating the return to school dates; or

Drive Thru Covid Testing - Six FCPS Sites

Drive thru

Starting this week, students may obtain COVID-19 diagnostic testing at six drive-through sites in Fairfax County. Diagnostic testing is provided for anyone who has symptoms or is identified as a close contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

COVID-19 testing helps us reduce the virus’ spread and keep our schools safe places for all students to learn. We encourage you to utilize our new diagnostic testing services as needed.

Appointments are not required for diagnostic testing but families must register in the secure online portal. When you register and provide consent for your child to be tested, they will also be added to Stenwood's screening testing pool. If you do not wish for them to be part of the weekly screening testing pool, simply log back into the online portal after your child’s test is complete and withdraw consent.

More information about diagnostic and screening testing, including site locations and schedules, is available on our website

Optional Screening Testing for Students Not Fully Vaccinated

FCPS is partnering with LongView International Technology Solutions, Inc. (LTS) to provide testing services for students.

Optional screening testing for Stenwood students will take place on Fridays from 8:45 - 9:30am at school.

One-time parent/legal guardian consent is required to begin COVID screening testing for a student to be tested at school. You may withdraw your consent for testing at any time. If you want your child to begin participating in COVID-19 screening testing, you must pre-register your child(ren) and provide consent using the LTS secure online portal. If you do not want your child to participate in COVID-19 screening testing, no action is required. You will have the option each week to update your child’s vaccination and consent for testing.

For all the details about optional COVID-19 screening testing, visit the FCPS website and review the FCPS COVID-19 Screening Testing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document.

Screening testing is a recommended layered prevention strategy that keeps Stenwood safe for in-person learning. Thank you for considering enrolling your child.

Vaccine Availability for Children Ages 5-11

Vax Up

The Fairfax Health District and Fairfax County Public Schools are hosting free COVID-19 vaccine clinics at 10 schools for students 5-11 years of age. Children do not need to be an FCPS student to attend these clinics. Vaccines will not be available for those 12 years and older. Children must be accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult at all community vaccination sites.

The Fairfax County Health Department’s webpage has information about the clinics and resources for finding and scheduling a vaccine appointment. Up-to-date information about vaccination opportunities is available on our website

Positivity Project: Self-Control

PP

This week, we are focusing on Self-Control. You have the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act.

“By constant self-discipline and self-control, you can develop greatness of character.”

                                                          ~Grenville Kleise

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • Do you consider yourself to be a person who has self-control? What things do you do that indicate this?
  • Why is self-regulation important?
  • What happens when your emotions take over? How can you work on developing greater self-control?

Daily Symptom Check

Parents are asked to screen their children every morning before sending them to school.  If you have any questions about whether your child is able to come to school based on symptoms or exposure, please call the office.

  • Feeling feverish and/or having chills – documented temperature of 100.4°F or higher?
  • Has there been any use of fever reducing medication within the last 24 hours?

  • In the past 14 days, have you had close contact (within about 6 feet for 15 minutes or more) with someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19?

Persons who have been fully vaccinated and are identified as a close contact to a COVID case do NOT need to quarantine if they meet the following criteria:

School Meals and

Free/Reduced Lunch Applications

Each student is eligible for one no-cost breakfast and one no-cost lunch each school day. Check out the  FCPS school meals menus.  If your student would like to purchase additional meals or a la carte items, they will need to pay. An additional meal is $4.50.

The best way to purchase items this year is to use MySchoolBucks. Set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account and help them memorize their pin. If you have questions about MySchoolBucks, our front office staff can help.

Free/Reduced Lunch Applications are available for those who qualify and wish to initiate or renew their applications for the 21-22 school year.  While a school breakfast and lunch are provided at no cost this school year, your family may benefit from keeping your application up to date. The application is available HERE
