Note from Dr. Goodloe:
Dear Rocky Run Families and Students,
Wishing each of you the joy of the many holidays of the season, as well as a restful winter break. It is important that EVERYONE takes a break and a breather to enjoy the time off and activities with loved ones. There is no assigned homework due immediately following the break and no major assessments will be given when we first return on January 3. I have encouraged our staff to unplug and leave school work behind until January as well. The school main office will be open limited hours during break from 9 AM-1 PM, appointment preferred
I welcome your feedback, questions and suggestions. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

Celebrations in our Community:
Christmas is a Christian holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. Celebrated each year on December 25th, it is one of the most important days of the year for Christians. It is celebrated all over the world, either as a religious holiday or as a time of celebration by both Christians and non-Christians. The traditions are different from country to country, but they nearly always include a feast, giving gifts or cards, attending church services, and enjoying traditions such as decorating the home and singing Christmas carols. Santa Claus is a tradition in many countries of the world.
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held in the United States to honor African heritage and culture. People light a kinara (candle holder with seven candles) and give each other gifts. Taking place from December 26 to January 1 every year, it was first celebrated in 1966 and was created as a way to help African Americans reconnect with their African cultural and historical heritage. The name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili matunda ya kwanza, meaning first fruits of the harvest. Many Christian African Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa do so in addition to observing Christmas.
Wishing all of our Rocky Run families a joyous holiday season and a very happy and healthy new year!

After-School Program
Click here to view the after-school schedule for the week of 1/3. There are no after-school activities on Friday, 12/17. All students should depart at the 2:15 dismissal bell.
Mark your calendars - There will be no after-school activities on 2/18 and 5/27. All students should depart at the 2:15 dismissal on those days. Also, as we head into the winter, please remember that the After-School Program will not meet on early release days or during inclement weather cancellations.
Spelling Bee - We will be hosting an in-person Spelling Bee this year. In order for students to be eligible to participate in the bee, they will need to attend at least one of our scheduled practice sessions. While the review of rules and procedures will be the same at each session, different word lists will be used for the mock spelling bee at each practice. Study materials will be distributed at practices, but if you want to get a head start on your bee preparation, you can pick up study materials any time before winter break from Mrs. Wetzel in Room 302.
Practice Sessions (students must attend at least one)
-Wednesday, 1/5 - after-school session 2 (3:20-4:05 pm) in Room 302
-Monday, 1/10 - after-school session 1 and/or 2 (2:30-3:15, 3:20-4:05 pm) in Room 302
-Thursday, 1/13 - after-school session 1 (2:30-3:15 pm) in Room 302
SPELLING BEE to be held on Wednesday, 2/2, from 2:30 until bee completion in the Lecture Hall (snow date is 2/9)
AMC 8 Math Competition - We still have a few spaces available! This competition is open to all Rocky Run students. It will be held after-school on Tuesday, January 18th, from 2:30-4:00 pm. The sign-up form and more information are posted on the After-School Group on Schoology (resources --> club sign up forms folder).
All program announcements are posted on the After-School Schoology group. It's not too late to start attending our clubs! Any club on the schedule that is not marked with an asterick * is open enrollment, so students are welcome to attend as they are interested and available!
