A Message From The PTA

Hello Parents,

GBW will be conducting the following extracurricular academic competitions:

SENIOR SPELLING BEE (4th - 6th)​

  • Description: The Scripps National Spelling Bee is an annual competition with the purpose of​ helping students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. Each year, thousands of schools across the US participate in the Spelling Bee, competing for college scholarships and other prizes.
  • Ages/Grade Team Requirements: ​ Open to all GBW students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades.
  • Competition Dates: School level (February), Local (March)
  • GBW Coordinator: Vrushali Gosavi
  • Teacher Sponsor​: Mrs. Aanstoos

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD - Division B​ (5th and 6th)

  • Description: Science Olympiad is a team-based competition centered on specific scientific topics. Science Olympiad includes a wide variety of science events, where students work in pairs or groups of three to study a STEM topic and set of rules, prepare for competition (whether that's a test, a skill they have to demonstrate, or a device they have to build and test) and compete against other teams from all over Virginia and the country.
  • Ages/Grade Team Requirements:​ Open to all GBW students in 5th and 6th grades.
  • Deadlines:​ Team must be formed and registered by Mid-December.
  • Competition Dates: Regional (Jan/Feb), State (March)
  • Other Requirements: Requires a parent as the liaison between the​ Head Coach of the participating students and competition organizers. Parents are expected to volunteer to coach all team members for the events. Additional volunteers will be required for running some events on the day of the competition.
  • Teams:​ Three teams, maximum of 15 members each. Only the best teams from the three regional tournaments will advance to the State Tournament. The winning team of the State Tournament will advance to the National Tournament.
