PTSO NEWS

Happy Thanksgiving

The Woodson PTSO wishes our entire Cavalier community a restful, safe and happy Thanksgiving break.

The next PTSO meeting will be held in January 2022.

Staff Appreciation - THANK YOU!

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the PTSO-hosted grab n' go snack wagon for Woodson staff last Thursday. They were grateful for the plentiful snacks to fuel them through their long days.

A heartfelt thank you to Judy Tonko and Tina Walkinshaw for coordinating this event.

Help Us Thank Woodson Teachers and Staff

The PTSO invites all Woodson families to celebrate and recognize our wonderful teachers and staff this holiday season.

High School isn’t the same as elementary school where we had organized gift-giving and room parents. Please take time throughout the school year, and especially now in the holiday season, to recognize and thank the educators and support professionals that work with our children. Simple notes of appreciation, emails of gratitude and letters in support of teachers, counselors, principal, and/or support staff have enormous, meaningful impact.

Additionally, Woodson PTSO is collecting gift cards to raffle at the Annual Holiday Party for the Teachers and Staff on Thursday, December 16th.  Parents, families and students are invited to donate gift cards; please send donated gift cards to the front office in an envelope addressed to “Attn: Celeste Jones, Holiday Party Raffle Prizes.”

We kindly ask that we receive all donations by Wednesday, December 15th.  Please contact Celeste Jones at cbjones@fcps.edu for more information.

Flocking Senior Class of 2022 - Volunteer/s Needed

The PTSO is looking for a senior parent volunteer to take over the Senior Flocking for the Class of 2022.

There are about 350 flamingos available from last year's flocking initiative, so only yard signs would need to be funded.

If you are interested in this opportunity to celebrate the Class of 2022, please email woodsonclass2021@gmail.com.

FCPS Cares

Our teachers have been carrying a huge load this year. In this month of Thanksgiving, consider submitting an FCPS Cares on behalf of a staff member who has impacted your child or family. It is a quick form that only takes a couple of minutes to complete.

FREE WEBINAR

Understanding Athletic Recruiting - Wednesday, Dec 1st, 7:00 pm EST

Athletic recruiting is one of the more confusing processes for counselors, students, and their families because it involves a tricky intersection of parent expectations, student aspirations, coach idiosyncrasies, and conflicting league policies. This program examines recruiting from an educational standpoint to learn how counselors can “coach” students and families on how to ask the right questions, self-recruit to achieve their athletic goals, and avoid the “Here’s How to Win a Scholarship” distractions from popular media and for-profit recruiting services. We will include the latest trends in athletic recruiting, including specialization, early commitments, the rise of club sports, the nuances of NESCAC and Ivy league recruiting, the accelerated timeline, and the impact of the pandemic on recruiting from both the coaches’ and students’ perspectives.

Community Resources for Mental Health, Wellness, and Support Groups

We are committed to providing and sharing programs and information to help parents, teachers and students navigate high school and beyond. The wide range of issues include but are not limited to: coping with stress; parenting advice; homework resources; suicide prevention; drug use, addiction and overdose; and underage drinking.

Senior Portraits

The goal is to have all seniors represented in the yearbook. Seniors photographed prior to the yearbook deadline will have their images sent to the school for inclusion in the yearbook.

If you have not taken your senior portrait, you can schedule an appointment at the Annandale Studio location.  Schedule an appointment here. Click the blue 'Book Appointment' button to get started.  You'll select the Virginia - Northern Virginia location and enter Woodson High School in the search bar.  Select Woodson High School when it comes up and you can select your sitting level and appointment date and time from there.

The studio is located at the John G. Fox Memorial Hall, 7128 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003.

There are two remaining dates for students to schedule through the balance of the calendar year.  Saturday, November 20th and Saturday, December 18th.  We would encourage any seniors interested in scheduling a studio appointment to do so as soon as possible as available appointment slots are filling quickly.

Questions, please reach out to Christine Rocca at crocca@lifetouch.com

Voluntary Student COVID Screening

FCPS is offering voluntary COVID screening testing for unvaccinated students. The portal to register is now open.

This optional, random, student screening / testing is available for students who are NOT vaccinated against COVID19.  This is a mitigation strategy to prevent the spread of COVID19 by identifying possible positive cases.

If you wish to sign your student up for this optional program, parents/guardians will need to preregister and provide consent for services in the LTS online registration portal prior to service delivery.  If your student is already vaccinated you may disregard this message.

LTS is the contracted vendor for FCPS student testing. Woodson HS was assigned the testing time of Fridays from 12-3pm.  LTS will randomly choose up to 10% of our population, from only those who have agreed to be tested.

Once identified, we will send a pass for those students at a designated time between 12-3pm on Fridays and they will go to the testing location at Woodson.  Testing should only take a few minutes. Testing may not be the same time each Friday and the day of the week could possibly change. Students will be missing class to be tested. We are working with an outside vendor, so we cannot commit to having any ability to alter testing times.

Results are uploaded to the same system where you registered your child for this program.  Only administrators will have access to this information at Woodson High School.

Have problems registering?  LTS Contact information for IT support/registration support: fcps@lts.com  (NOT affiliated with FCPS and FCPS cannot assist with this process as technical support)

Get to know the Woodson Library and how it can help your student!

Hello from the Woodson Library.

The Library is busy scheduling classes for research projects but did you know we also meet individually with students in person or by email to help them find resources?

Students can stop by during learning seminar, afterschool or email us their request for articles. We will send the students' research articles for them to choose from for their project. The Library has had positive feedback from teachers and the students stating how this is a real-time saver. We are hoping this service will allow students to focus on completing their projects in a timely manner.

If you are interested in learning more about the Woodson Library or how to use the Woodson databases to help your student, please email the Woodson Librarians:  Lisa Muir (lkmuir@fcps.edu) or Sharon Anderson (msanderson@fcps.edu) to schedule a time.

Thank you from the Woodson Librarians
