Message from the Principal

thanksgiving

As the Thanksgiving holiday is quickly approaching, I wanted to take a moment to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. I’m sending all the Keene Mill families best wishes for a Thanksgiving full of good food that fills your table, good health as you work hard, and good times with family and friends.   Thanksgiving Day is a perfect time to remind one another of the many reasons to be grateful.  I’m thankful for the students, staff, and families I have the pleasure of working with daily.

Linda Peace

Keene Mill Principal

Window for AAP Level IV (full-time) Referrals to Close December 15, 2021

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to Lori Luster, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART), no later than December 15.

The window to submit an AAP Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they are submitted to the central selection committee by emailing, Lori Luster  laluster@fcps.edu.  Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.

For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our fall parent information meetings at Keene Mill ES.

AAP Parent Virtual Coffee, Monday, Nov 22nd

Kings Park and Kings Glen families only

In an effort to provide local access to full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services, our school is in the process of starting a Local Level IV Program. Level IV services will be available at Kings Park Elementary in grade 3 and Kings Glen in grade 4 beginning in the 2022-2023 school year

The Local Level IV Program will allow center eligible students to stay at their neighborhood school to receive full-time services and will also provide increased opportunities for students throughout the school to access AAP curriculum more often.

A virtual parent coffee will be hosted by Kings Park and Kings Glen via Zoom on Monday, November 22, 2021 at 9:00am. Register for the virtual parent coffee using this link. Zoom links will be emailed by 8:00am on Monday, Nov. 22.  During this meeting, we will discuss the process for becoming a Local Level IV site, describe what this means for our school, and answer any questions. We hope that you will be able to join us!

Irving Middle School AAP Level IV Services Information Night

Irving staff will provide a program on Monday, November 29th at 6:00pm at Irving to talk about the Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) they offer for students who have qualified for Level IV services as they differ from what students experience in elementary schools. Irving staff will discuss the classes offered for students who have qualified for Level IV services and the process to apply should families want their child to participate in these classes. The FCPS AAP website also provides information about the various levels and the process to apply. If you have any questions about this program or the classes for AAP Level IV students at Irving, please contact Irving’s Director of Student Services, Meg Gollinger (magollinger@fcps.edu).
