Dear Fairhill Families
As many of you know, Fairhill is a Positivity Project school. As part of a Positivity Project school we focus on a specific character trait each week. For the next two weeks, our school is focusing on GRATITUDE as we gear up for Thanksgiving. While we will be doing many activities to share our gratitude with each other, we wanted to dedicate this Administrator’s Avenue to showing our gratitude for our students, our staff, and our families.
When we walk around our hallways, we see students engaged in learning, laughing, wondering, smiling, and growing. For that, we are grateful. These past two years have required both educators and families to climb mountains that we felt were unattainable. But we did it! We see that in our students each day. For that, we are grateful!
Whether your child has a novice teacher or a seasoned veteran teacher, we can confidently say that our staff is exceptional. We are constantly in awe of the dedication, time, and passion that our staff bring to school each day. For that, we are grateful!
And finally, the glue that holds our community together is you. Our families at Fairhill are supportive, trusting and have high hopes for our students. We, as educators, are lucky to have a community whose values and goals for their children match ours. The work of parenting and teaching will never be easy but with the amazing partnership we have built together, we are accomplishing great things. Thank you all for being such strong partners to our amazing school. We are grateful for you!
We hope that you all enjoy Thanksgiving.
With deepest gratitude and appreciation,
Ted & Courtney
PS: Don’t forget to join us for our Reading Town Hall and PTA Meeting on Zoom this Thursday! Link will be sent on Thursday.

Fairhill Book Fair is Back!
We are SO excited to announce that the BOOK FAIR IS RETURNING this year! Fairhill Library’s Book Fair will take place the week of December 6-10. It is our main fundraiser, and this year we plan to use the proceeds to replace our aging animal nonfiction collection (books pictured were published in 1990 and 1998, respectively). This year, we will not be able to have a Family Night of shopping, but students will be allowed to shop during their weekly library time. To help make this easier for you, we will record a video of the fair once it’s set-up so you can help your child make purchasing decisions. We will also enable the “eWallet” feature Scholastic offers. It is a safe, secure, contactless way to shop our fair without the need for cash to be sent to school. More information will be sent home closer to the time. Thanks for your support!

Reminder: Window for AAP Level IV (full-time) Referrals to Close December 15, 2021
Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to Erica Campbell, AART escampbell1@fcps.edu, no later than December 15.
The window to submit an AAP Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually. Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.
Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they are submitted to the central selection committee. Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.
For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our parent information meetings held by Mrs. Campbell in October.

Early Student Pick-ups
On occasion you may need to pull your student from school early. It helps our staff locate your child in a timely manner and have them ready sooner if we have advance notice. We understand that this is not always possible, but if it is please email Fairhill ES Attendance before noon so that we can communicate with the teacher earlier in the day. This will let us know the precise location of your student when you arrive. Also, please be aware that if you pick your student up after 3:30 p.m. you will not be able to leave before dismissal unless you park on Chichester Lane. Our Kiss and Ride lane is full at that time, blocking the parking lot, and the buses are blocking the front driveway at that time. Thank you for helping us with a smooth early pick up of your student.

Fairfax County Public Schools Welcomes Dr. Jill Biden to Kick Off National 5-11 Vaccination Rollout
Fairfax County Public Schools kicked off the national rollout of COVID-19 vaccination for children ages 5-11 on Monday. The school division welcomed First Lady Dr. Jill Biden to a clinic at the school where the first polio vaccine was administered in 1954 (see story below).
Surrounded by a group of children who had just received their first dose, she urged all parents to follow in the footsteps of the Polio Pioneers and have their children vaccinated as soon as possible.
Watch this video to see the sights and sounds of the day’s events.
