Dear Powell Families,
As the Thanksgiving holiday is fast approaching, I wanted to take a moment to wish all of you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving. I know I continue to be very thankful to be a part of such a loving and supportive school community. I feel as though I speak for the staff when I say your children truly bring us joy every day! I know for me, I can be having the worst day ever, and one small interaction with a student is an instant mood builder.
This holiday break I have asked my staff to truly take a break, not check email, and immerse themselves in friends and family. Now, more than ever, everyone needs slow down and take the time to recharge their batteries. Thank you for understanding that any emails sent to your child(ren)’s teacher(s) will likely receive a response when we return from the holiday break. As always, I appreciate you giving the teachers this grace so they can return to school ready to give all of our students their very best.
Once again, have a wonderful Thanksgiving break next week!
Your Proud Principal,
Ms. Luerssen
On October 18, 2021 our community and country lost a great man and the namesake of our school, General Colin L. Powell. Since his passing our staff has been engaged in conversations about the ways in which we will honor him and his memory this year and in the school years ahead. It is important to us that we have input and involvement from our staff, parents and students so our school community as a whole has voice on this important work.
All parents and guardians are invited to attend a virtual meeting with our faculty and staff to support the planning of the ways we will honor General Powell’s memory. The meeting will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, December 9 from 7-8pm. The Zoom link will be shared as the meeting date approaches.
General Powell always took great in having many schools across the country, like ours, bear his name. To show our appreciation for being a namesake school we sent his family a watercolor of our school signed by our faculty and staff. (pictured below) We look forward to continuing to find ways to keep his memory alive through our actions here at the school.
The deadline for Level IV Referral materials is December 15th. All referral materials should be sent electronically to Kathleen Bach at kmbach@fcps.edu. Level IV referrals are for current 2nd – 6th grade students.
Parents should submit:
- Completed Level IV Referral Form (required)
- Parent/Guardian Questionnaire (optional)
- 2 pages total of work samples (optional)
- Work samples can not exceed two pages total.
- If a piece of writing is two pages long you can shrink the pages and put two pages on one so it counts as one page.
- Do not overload pages. I would not put more than 2-3 items on one page. The committee must be able to read the work.
- Parents may handwrite or type a short blurb on work samples to tell what the sample is showing or what the student was doing.
- Samples should represent academic areas such as math, reading, writing, science, and social studies.
*ALL FILES MUST BE PDF, JPG, or PNG.*
You may find additional information on our parent Schoology site in the AAP folder. You may also visit the AAP page on www.fcps.edu.
If you have any questions please reach out to Kathleen Bach, kmbach@fcps.edu.
This year our students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade have STEAM classes. It’s a fun time for students to learn the design process, how to problem solve, and get creative! Many of our projects use recycled materials or items you may have around the house. Check out the latest things we need and see if you can help by donating these items!
-aluminum foil (pre-cut pull out sheets preferred but any is appreciated)
-empty rectangular tissue boxes
-clean, empty cereal boxes (you can collapse them so they take up less room)
-popsicle sticks/craft sticks (any size, any color)
-pipe cleaners/fuzzy sticks
-cups (Styrofoam, plastic, paper …. any size)
If you have any items send them in with your child or drop them off at the front office. Thank you so much for your help!
Sincerely, Mrs. Bach
IT’S BACK! The Scholastic Signature Book Fair will be live and in person November 29-December 3. An amazing selection of books is headed our way! At the Book Fair you will find the latest and finest titles for kids.
If you have never seen a book fair, you are in for a treat! The library is transformed into an amazing bookstore for students to browse and purchase books, games, bookmarks and much, much more. Because the book fair is a fundraiser for our school library the prices are set by Scholastic and for every sale we get a portion of the profit. This money allows us to purchase books and materials for students to enjoy in the library.
More information regarding the book fair will be sent home in the upcoming Tuesday Folder.
Looking forward to seeing you at the fair!
Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Starbuck

VP of Ways and Means (Second Vice President) still needed: The primary function of this position it to be creative and oversee / organize fund raising activates. If not already aware, most of the awesome events that we are able to have for our student, such as the spring ball, come from our success at fundraising. Because of this, the VP of Ways and Means is a crucial position to be filled. It’s probably the most fun too.
As a PTA Board Member, you will not only be supporting your own child’s education, but that of all of our children, as well as the Powell community. Moreover, you will be a vital part of the ongoing discussion with the district level administration about what is happening in our school, and will help to implement new plans and goals set forth by FCPS.
We need the VP Programs candidates ASAP! Have questions? Email Jeff, president@cpespta.org.
PTA Support: When you purchase from Amazon Smile you can directly support your childs education. In your Amazon smile account, just search for COLIN L. POWELL ELEMENTARY PTA and select. Please do not forget to bookmark your www.smile.amazon.com so you ensure continued support.
In addition to the aforementioned, the PTA is working on other ways for you to support the children. Expect to see spirit wear and other great items to be forthcoming for purchase.
