Thank You West Springfield Community! Our pantry is full thanks to your generous donations to the Food for Neighbors program! We are so grateful to be able to give this food right back to students in need at Irving, West Springfield High School, and a few other schools in our area!

Volunteers Needed!

Parents/Guardians we are in need of your help! If you have an hour or two you can spare to assist us with hallway and lunch supervision, we would appreciate your help and time. Unfortunately, we are still experiencing some behaviors that are impacting our ability to maintain an optimal learning environment. In order for us to have the best learning environment, we need some additional adults in the hallways and monitoring lunches and we think parents/guardians are just the people to help us achieve our goals.

If you have time and would be willing to join our new Helping Horsemen Volunteer program, please complete the form linked HERE. Thank you in advance for assisting us in providing a safe and positive learning environment!

We will close our volunteer sign up this coming Wednesday, November 17, so we can begin the HR process for volunteers.

Fairfax County Youth Survey

The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The results of this survey are published each year on https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health-humanservices/fairfax-county-youth-survey  and are used by school officials, youth leadership classes, youth-serving county agencies, and local non-profits to determine the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs offered in schools and communities. It is also used to identify changing trends and areas of need. The survey is anonymous and no individual information is reported.

The survey will be administered between November 15-30, 2021, during a time of day determined by your child's school administration. A copy of the survey will be available to parents and/or guardians on line at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/youth-survey  and in the school counseling office of your child's school beginning October 15, 2021.

If you do not wish for your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form (see attached letter with form) and return it to your child's school counselor no later than November 15, 2021.

If you have questions about the survey, contact Stefan Mascall, coordinator, Student Safety and Wellness Office, at 571-423-4270.

Want a way to support families in our community this holiday season?

Each year, the Irving staff and community adopt Irving families to provide gifts during the holiday season. As you can imagine, there is even more need this year in the Irving community. If you would like to donate directly to a family in our neighborhood by providing a gift card, please sign up using this Sign Up Genius. Please plan to deliver the gift card to Meg Gollinger at Irving by December 3rd to ensure we have enough time to get the gift cards to families.

If your family needs assistance, please reach out to Ms. Jamison at tdjamison@fcps.edu.

After School Program Information

Current and up to date information is available on the Schoology platform, in the All Student and All Parent Course tabs, respectively. After school announcements are shared during all lunch periods, the Irving Stays After board and during Rock Block. To reach the After School Specialist, please email Ms. Natalie at naduncan@fcps.edu.

Library News

Our Readers Unite Book Club is continuing to meet each week, with a good number of participants.  The group meets in the library after school on Mondays, from 2:30-3:30.  Any students who are avid readers are encouraged to join.  Students can express interest by asking in the library or by emailing either of the librarians.

All 7th grade English classes have visited the library to select a narrative nonfiction title of their choice to read for an upcoming English class book project.  If you are wondering what “narrative nonfiction” means, it is a true account written in the style of a novel; biographies often fall into this category. Your student’s book does not need to come from the library, but it should meet the qualifications of a “narrative nonfiction” title.

News from Your PTA

PTA Meeting

Thank you for joining us at the last PTA meeting! Your participation was key in helping us to make decisions on programs, plan for future events, welcome our new parent liaison, and make improvements to the school – we are now able to purchase a new bike rack!

Spirit Night

Our next Spirit Night will be held at Nando’s Peri-Peri on Saturday, November 20. Please see the attached flyer for details and an amazing promotional offer!

Movie Night

On December 3 at 7:00 pm we will host a showing of “Elf” for students, and a contest of some sort (cookie decorating, ugly sweater, etc.). We’re still deciding, so email us if you have a great idea! Parents and guardians will have the opportunity to watch and discuss “Most Likely to Succeed.” Snacks will be provided at both viewings.

Teacher Appreciation Pies

For December, we would like to show our appreciation to our teachers and staff by gifting them with a tasty pie as they head into winter break. Click here for more information and to sponsor a pie.
