COVID 19 Vaccinations for Children 5-11 Years Old

Pop-up Vaccine Clinics for Students Aged 5-11

This Tuesday, November 16, school-located pop up pediatric COVID-19 vaccine clinics will begin in our highest impacted communities. More information can be found on the Fairfax County Health Department website.

Reduction in the Quarantine Period to 10 Days for School Exposures

Starting Monday, November 15, FCPS will reduce the duration of quarantine for students who are exposed to COVID-19 in a school setting.

Parents/Guardians must keep their child at home until one of the following quarantine periods is met:

  • 10 days of quarantine, the child remains symptom free AND parents provide a copy of the FCPS pause letter indicating the return to school date; or
  • 14 days of quarantine and parents provide a copy of the clearance email from the health department.

.

COVID Testing

FCPS will be offering  COVID-19 screening/nasal swab testing of students at each school site beginning the week of November 15th.

Routine testing is a highly recommended strategy to reduce COVID-19 transmission and keep our schools safe. FCPS is following recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At least 10% of students who are not fully vaccinated and have parent/guardian consent will be randomly selected for weekly testing. At Bailey’s Upper that means we will test approximately 53 students each week. If we have less than 54 families opt-in to the testing, the same 53 students would be tested each week.

Parent/guardian consent is required for students to be part of the testing pool. We will share more information about how to submit your child(ren)’s vaccination status and opt in to testing when that information becomes available.

Test results will be kept confidential. Parents/guardians will be able to review results through a secure vendor portal. Parents/guardians may select an option to share their child’s test results with FCPS. Sharing results with FCPS is optional.

More information about COVID-19 testing in FCPS can be found on the FCPS website.

COVID-19 Case Notification Update

Many families are finding it stressful and overwhelming to receive a new COVID notification email every time there is a positive case in their child’s school. FCPS has updated our process to provide families some relief.

Once a week, either on Friday or the last day of school for the week, school leadership will share an update if there were any COVID-19 positive cases confirmed in the school that week. The FCPS COVID-19 Health Metrics webpage will still be updated daily for families who wish to know about cases in real time.

There were no confirmed cases of Covid-19 this week at Bailey’s Upper.

A story to share about the power of kindness

Next week at Bailey’s Upper, we will be celebrating kindness in many different ways, starting with the Dance For Kindness on Monday and continuing throughout the week. Here is a story on Tumblemobile.com about the power of kindness told in a classic folktale, The Contest Between the Sun and the Wind. (Username and password are fairfax.) You can find many more stories, ebooks, and videos on Tumblemobile, the new name for Tumblebooks. Enjoy some reading and listening to stories with you child this weekend!

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Information

•What is scoliosis? Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. A spine affected by scoliosis has a sideways curve, making it appear more like an “S” or a “C” than a straight line. Untreated scoliosis can lead to limited motion, back pain, deformity, and in extreme cases, impaired function of the heart and lungs. Early detection and treatment may prevent scoliosis from progressing.

•When should my child be screened for scoliosis? Scoliosis most commonly occurs during the growing years, between age 10 and the time an adolescent is fully grown. Screenings should begin in early adolescence. Pediatricians should check for early signs during a routine physical exam.

•What causes scoliosis? The cause of scoliosis is unknown. Scoliosis is more common in females than males.

•How is scoliosis treated? In many cases, the curve is mild and does not require treatment. In some cases, treatment may involve bracing. Severe curves may require spinal surgery. The need for treatment is best determined by a trained medical professional.

•What are the signs of scoliosis?
❑ One shoulder may be higher than the other.
❑ One shoulder blade may be higher or more prominent than the other.
❑ One hip appears higher or more prominent than the other.
❑ Unevenness of the waist.
❑ The spine curves sideways.
❑ The head is not centered over the pelvis.

Fact Sheet

If you have any concern that your child may have scoliosis, make sure that your child is screened by a health care provider. The school Public Health Nurse may provide screening for individual students at the request of the parent or guardian.
