Dear Haycock Families,
For those of you who signed up to assist with recess, we want to thank you. We paused this plan at this time based on the feedback that we received from teachers that they are still working on providing positive behavior supports for many of our students at recess. For some students, having been virtual all last year and part of the prior year has made the transition back to in person a little more challenging. Our teachers want to provide the care and support that our students need right now, especially during recess. We are working with our teachers to identify other ways that parents can assist and help out and are appreciative of the great and widespread desire on your part to help.
It has been a busy week! Sixth graders attended a virtual fieldtrip to the National Gallery of Art, working with very knowledgeable docents who supported student learning.
COVID screening testing began yesterday at Haycock. For those of you who want to provide consent for your child to participate in the COVID Screening testing, here is the link to do so https://www.fcps.edu/news/pre-registration-optional-student-screening-testing
We wish you and your family a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
With gratitude for your partnership,
Dr. Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu

Develop Critical and Creative Thinking Skills in Your Child |
In Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), all students from Kindergarten to grade 12 receive instruction to develop critical and creative thinking skills. This instruction is part of the continuum of services that are developed in the Advanced Academics Programs (AAP). The goal is to build upon students’ individual talents and skills to maximize academic potential in all learners. Equity of access to the services is a priority within FCPS.
Advanced Academics Programs have developed and published resources for parents to support children’s learning at home. The resources include enrichment opportunities, children’s literature, research, and critical and creative thinking activities. Below are the key critical and creative thinking strategies upon which FCPS students focus.
-
Visualization – consciously forming mental images of a person, place or thing
-
Questioning – actively clarifying, exploring, challenging, and assessing the understanding of ideas
-
Analogies – comparing two items to perceive similarities
-
Plus, Minus, Interesting – framing the consideration of positive, negative, and intriguing aspects of an idea into one picture
-
Point of View – analyzing how different people might look at the same idea and/ or situation
-
Mind Mapping – recording information with supporting ideas and examples that branch out from the main idea
-
Encapsulation – stating ideas in precise and concise form
-
Decisions & Outcomes – understanding the choosing from alternatives ideas and the events which follow
-
Fluency, Originality, Flexibility & Elaboration – the production of many ideas, the expression of new ideas, and the combining of existing ideas.
See the FCPS Advanced Academics Program website for more information including AAP philosophy, parent presentations, program referral procedures, and independent program review on equitable identification practices.
