Students and families are being encouraged to take part in monthly Walking Wednesdays during the 2021-22 school year to help promote mental and physical health. The Safe Routes to School office will be promoting Walking Wednesdays throughout the year, with a different theme each month.
November’s event is dedicated to Ruby Bridges, the elementary student who, as the first African American student to integrate William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, was escorted to school by federal marshals in 1960. Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is November 17.

Happy November Woodley Hills family! Mr. Shoop and I have been having a wonderful time with your students. It’s been great to see our students move in-person than seeing our students in a virtual setting. For the month of November we will be doing gymnastics: All grades will be learning about strength, balance, and flexibility.
Grades:K-2 will be learning different types of animal walks, different type of rolls (log, pencil, egg, etc). They will also be learning basic balance beam skills. Students will also be learning about healthy hydration and the importance of it.
Grades: 3-6 will be creating a gymnastics routine for the floor and balance beam. Students will also be able identify where basics muscles located on the body.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at anytime. Mr. Scharkowski- mrscharkowsk@fcps.edu and Mr. Shoop DMShoop@fcps.edu
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Community clinics and local pediatricians will begin administering the COVID-19 vaccine to children ages 5-11 very soon. Up-to-date information about vaccination opportunities will be available on our website.
We asked local pediatricians to talk with us about some of the questions families have about the vaccine. In this short video we learn how the vaccine works and its safety
With the cold and flu season upon us, your child may be sent home if they have COVID-like symptoms. We want them back in the classroom as soon as they are well, so FCPS has created new options to help families complete the return to school process. Learn more online.
In response to the request from families to limit the number of emails or letters in regards to positive COVID cases in the building, we will be sharing information on Friday or the last day of school for the week. We will share the information in this section of our newsletter. The FCPS COVID-19 Health Metrics webpage will still be updated daily for families who wish to know about cases in real time.
This week we have had no students or staff to test positive for COVID.
The basal resource review process is a unique opportunity to have a voice in the books and materials that create the foundation of instruction across the division. Encourage staff and families to participate with this message:
Be a Partner in Education: Participate in Resource Review
Basal resources are the books and materials the division purchases to create a common foundation for instruction across all schools while allowing teachers to make necessary adjustments to support every student’s unique learning needs.
This fall, you have an opportunity to advocate for resources that are accessible for all students, including those with disabilities; represent our diverse community, and support every student’s ability to thrive.
Find out more about basal resource reviews and how to share feedback.
Please complete these forms as soon as possible
If you need more information, please contact the school office at 703-799-2000.
