Historic National VaxUP Kickoff

First Lady Dr. Jill Biden came to Franklin Sherman Elementary school in McLean to kickoff 5-11 COVID-19 vaccinations. Franklin Sherman made history in 1954 as the first school to administer the polio vaccine to children, a historical parallel to today’s vaccination efforts.

She handed out “superstar” stickers to the students who participated in the clinic.

“This vaccine is the best way to protect your children against COVID-19. It’s been thoroughly reviewed and rigorously tested, it’s free and it’s available for every child aged five and up,” Dr. Biden told an audience of parents and their newly vaccinated children.

Where To Get a Pediatric Vaccine

photo of students holding up a sign about how to prepare for the vaccine

FCPS is encouraging all parents whose children are eligible to get vaccinated. We know that vaccination is the way out of this pandemic and we are asking you to help us continue to make our schools as safe as they possibly can be.

The Fairfax County Health Department’s webpage has resources for finding and scheduling a vaccine appointment. Up-to-date information about vaccination opportunities is available on our website

We know you may have questions about the vaccine. Last week, we shared a video of local pediatricians explaining vaccine safety. This week, they offer tips for preparing your child for their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
