Principal Message:

Happy Fall Weekend West Potomac!

I don’t know about you, but I love the turn of seasons.  We finally have some color in our foliage and it is beautiful.  We have also made it to the turn of the quarter.  As we enter 2nd quarter, we will continue on our journey with equitable grading practices.  As promised we will have a hybrid Q/A meeting on Thursday, November 18th (this is a change in date) at 6 pm in our Auditorium.  You may also participate virtually at the zoom link below (Spanish translation will be available in the zoom link as well).  If you have not already had time to listen to the grading recording that was sent a couple of weeks ago, it is also linked below.  I encourage you to watch/listen to it as some of the general questions/concerns are addressed there.  That way we will have time for other questions during the Q/A.  I hope that you all have a wonderful Fall weekend.

You are invited to a Zoom webinar.

When: Nov 18, 2021 06:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Topic: WPHS Grading Practices Q &A

School Activities/News Updates

MOE'S Chip and Queso Bar Is Back to Celebrate Students!

  • The PTSA and Student Services are happy to announce that we will once again host a celebration for the students who earned all A's or A/B for the first quarter with Moe's chips/queso and guac! The celebration this year will be on FRIDAY NOVEMBER 19TH during all four lunches. This year we will be setting up outside on the senior patio and masks will be required even outdoors.  We need volunteers to help set up, serve, and clean up. Look out for a sign-up genius so we can bring this popular celebration back to our hard-working kids. No experience is necessary, and it is a great way to meet other parents and see the kids in school again.
  • We also like to hold a raffle for $5 gift cards (Trop Smoothie, Dunkin, Starbucks are very popular, but any will do!) -at each lunch too. If you would like to donate $5 gift cards you can drop them off at my house (8438 Porter Lane Alexandria VA) or at the school office in an envelope marked "PTSA RAFFLE". Stay tuned for information about making cash donations so we can purchase them for you - we will let you know next week if we can set that up.
  • Thank you. If you have any questions, please email me at spbodner@yahoo.com.

Student Services / College and Career Center Updates

A Message from Ms. Knudson, WP Pyramid Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist:

  • Hi West Potomac Community! I wanted to make you aware that the students were given a lesson in Advisory this week that focused on Opioids. The students learned what they are, the dangers of abusing them, and about their link to overdoses nationally and here in Fairfax County. Deaths due to overdose are the highest that they have ever been and now is the leading cause of unnatural death in the state of Virginia.

  • Parents, please speak with your students about these drugs and make sure you keep your prescription drugs locked up. I have medicine lock boxes available for free for anyone who would like one. As we are entering the holiday season, more people may be in and out of your house so make sure your prescription drugs, tobacco products, vaping devices, and any over the counter medicine that can be abused like Robitussin or Benadryl are locked up.

  • Contact Elizabeth Knudson at eaknudson@fcps.edu for a Medicine Lock Box or with questions.

9th Grade S.O.S. Program and Brief Screening for Adolescent Depression

  • Beginning on Monday Student Services will begin the Signs of Suicide (S.O.S.) Program and administer the Brief Screening for Adolescent Depression following the presentation with all 9th graders.  We will be meeting with about seven advisory classes each day beginning Monday and continuing November 10, 12, and 16.  9th Grade Parents and Guardians previously received information about this program via an e-notify sent on October 18.  Based on responses given on the screener Student Services will be following up with students individually and if your child is met with based on their responses, you will receive a call from one of our team members.
  • Through the program, students learn:
    • that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
    • how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
    • to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
    • who they can turn to at school for help, if they need it.
  • For awareness we will also be implementing this program with our 11th graders on December 1, 3, 7 and 9.  11th grade parents and guardians received information about the program via an e-notify on November 2.
