Sleepy Hollow Updates

November 8, 2021

Principal's Message

My Dearest Sleepy Hollow Family,

We hope this newsletter finds you in the best of health and in great spirits. Please join me in celebrating the wonderful work of our ESOL Team. Because of their collaborative efforts, English language learners (ELLs) in grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School will get an opportunity to develop and share their retelling skills using six different classic tales and matching story puppets.

The Partners in Puppets Project, authored by ESOL colleague Erin Bueno de Mesquita (former Sleepy Hollow ESOL Teacher) is designed for Spanish speaking students to engage in structured play and retelling with their teachers at school. Then stories and puppets will travel to the student’s home for students to share and practice retelling with their families. Students are encouraged to share, retell and discuss these stories in either language to develop their oral language skills.

Last week, students and their families had an opportunity to meet with ESOL teachers Vivian Greblo, Catherine Weiss, and Sara Johnston, along with parent liaison, Ivanova Plazas, at the Willston Center, to hear a reading of The Three Little Pigs/Los Tres Cerditos in English and Spanish followed by a demonstration of how to use the puppets to retell the story. Students will gain vocabulary and confidence with repeated practice with their teachers, peers and families.

Wishing you all a week filled with Amazing Grace, kindness, joy, peace, and LOVE

~May kindness and love prevail in the heart and mind of humanity ~ Emmanuel Dagher

All the best,
Mattie Fallen, Principal

Library News

We are so excited for Barnes & Noble night coming up THIS FRIDAY November 12!  It will be amazing for the whole Sleepy Hollow ES community to be together (MASKED!) at the Seven Corners BN store, enjoying games, fun, and books!  Any purchases made will allow new titles to be added to our school library – thank you in advance to any who are considering shopping while at the store or online from 11/12-11/18 (use code 12615530 online).  If not making a purchase, that’s fine too!  Please join the fun and enjoy chatting with other families from the neighborhood.  Parents, thank you for monitoring your children’s social distancing and mask wearing – we want all to be safe.  See you at the fair – yay books!
