NO Afterschool Activities or Late Bus Transportation on Wed. 11/10 & Thurs. 11/11 Students are to depart at 2:15PM on these days

To Bee or not to Bee…

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational competition. The Bee’s purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. Students interested in competing should access the  Kilmer Spelling Bee Interest Form  after logging onto their FCPS Google account. This is to gauge student interest only currently as we work to confirm facilitation details.

What about the National Geographic Bee? “After many conversations and reflections with students, educators, and community members, the decision was made to permanently discontinue the National Geographic GeoBee to make way for new, transformative, and innovative geography education opportunities in which students around the globe can more equitably participate.” (National Geographic Bee )

Students have icons for Afterschool Sign-up (Weekly) & Afterschool Sign-In(Attendance)

on their FCPS laptop desktops.

How can students participate in Afterschool Activities?

1. Registration: Students need a completed  Afterschool Registration Form to stay after 2:15PM to participate in any activity, club, or with a teacher. This is general acknowledgement and permission  – it is not a club or specific activity registration.
2. Join the Afterschool Schoology Group (not Course): This is where updates are posted:

1. Club & Activities Sign-Up: Most activities are drop in (no-commitment) and your child’s participation may vary, depending upon activity capacities and sponsorship. Students will have the weekend to pre-register for the upcoming week’s offerings through the Afterschool Activity Sign-Up. This supports our planning for activities, snacks, and equitable opportunities for participation. The Sign-Up form is only accessible when already logged into a student FCPS Google account. The sign-up form prompts selections of date specific choices from a drop-down menu. If an activity is not listed, it will not meet on that day or it is full. Students are encouraged to only stay on days where activities they are interested in or curious about are offered. Students staying after for academic support with a teacher should also use the Activity Sign-Up form and select the teacher they are planning to stay with. If a student needs to stay after with a teacher for support and did not pre-register they may.
2. Afterschool Attendance: Anytime a student stays after school for any reason they must sign in using our Afterschool Attendance form. This is not optional and helps us respond to parent inquiries and locate students quickly and accurately. Afterschool plans and expectations should be made at home (before school) for when students stay after.

How to Get Home

Late Bus Transportation is provided on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday following Afterschool dismissal at 4:45pm. Students may be picked up by caregivers/designees any time before 4:45pm and may be asked to sign out if leaving early. All students are expected to be picked on time or access transportation provided. Students are permitted to use their phones only to communicate with caregivers directly after school during attendance/break/snack. Students are not permitted to leave school grounds and return for or during Afterschool. Once 1^st Block begins “Away for the Day” resumes, should a student need to answer a call/text from a caregiver during an activity they are able to check in with the Teacher/Sponsor to step out briefly. We also have phones in the Main Office 703.846.8800 and classrooms if needed. The number to the Transportation Office is for Kilmer is 703.249.7100

How to Start a New Club

Kilmer’s Afterschool Program is Student-Centered! We need your Voice and Participation!! We are open to club suggestions and feedback. IF a club is permissible, there is multiple student interest, a sponsor is available, and we can provide necessary materials/supplies the Afterschool Program

is happy to coordinate, and make it happen.
