Vaccine Availability (Ages 5-11)
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) remain committed to utilizing all available public health interventions to create a safer school environment. The authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11 provides our community another effective way to reduce the impact of the pandemic.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is about one-third the strength of the adult vaccine.
There are multiple opportunities to get a COVID-19 vaccine in the Fairfax Health District. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or another adult at all community vaccination sites; most sites will be providing vaccines by appointment only. These include:
- Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, 22035
- Mount Vernon District Office (Gerry Hyland Government Center), 8350 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, 22309
-
Tysons Community Vaccination Center, 7950 Tysons Corner Center, Tysons: visit here to make an appointment or call 877-829-4682. Appointment assistance is available in English, Spanish, and more than 100 other languages.
-
Inova Children’s Vaccination Clinic: visit here to make an appointment for their weekend clinics at the Inova Center for Personalized Health, 8100 Innovation Park Drive, Fairfax.
If you have questions, talk to your child’s healthcare provider, or call the Health Department’s COVID-19 information line at 703-267-3511.
FCPS School Year Calendar Development Webinar
FCPS is developing its 2022-23 School Year Calendar. We are committed to maintaining a transparent process, as we work to build a calendar that is inclusive and equitable.
Hearing from our community is an important part of this work. Please join us Monday, November 8, at 7 p.m., for a virtual Calendar Development Webinar hosted on the Zoom platform. This year, calendar development will be guided by a framework that clearly outlines the four factors that FCPS must consider when creating the school year calendar:
-
State and Federal Law: Have a secular reason to establish a holiday. Provide 180 days or 990 hours of instruction.
-
State Guidance: Establish a Calendar Feedback Committee and provide opportunities for community input such as a Calendar Survey and our upcoming webinar.
-
Superintendent Priorities: Deliver high-quality instruction for students, which includes professional development for teachers and ensuring schools are adequately staffed.
-
School Board Priorities: Each member will share their most important considerations for the school calendar.
Please register to attend the Calendar Development Webinar and indicate if you will need an interpreter. You will receive the webinar link on November 8, from “Office of Communication and Community Relations.”
Register to Attend: English | Arabic | Korean | Spanish
National School Psychology Week – Let’s Get in GEAR
The theme of this year's National School Psychology Week from November 8-12, is “Let's Get in GEAR.” Getting in GEAR together can help us set goals for growth, engage in action steps, advocate for needs, and raise our voices in discussions to create the connections necessary for students to develop critical academic and social emotional skills.
Ms. Lindsey Viellieu is the school psychologist for Island Creek Elementary. Access School Psychology Services to learn more about how school psychologists support schools.
