Note from Dr. Goodloe:

Dear Rocky Run Families and Students,

It was a great short week here at RRMS.  We definitely got our first taste of the chilly weather during outdoor PE, Lunches, and Rock Time Break.  We will continue to access outdoor spaces for lessons and student activities as long as the weather remains above freezing and without precipitation. We have closed the courtyard for lunches due to the large amount of shade and moisture and ice that builds up on the tables.

Morning Student Drop off and Tardies:

With the changes in weather, we have noted increased numbers of students being dropped off in the loop.  Overall the Kiss and Ride procedures have been followed and drop off has been smooth.  Please note that regardless of volume and traffic, students who arrive to Rocky Run after the 7:30 AM bell will be marked as unexcused tardy for their first class.  We do monitor weather and local traffic impacts and encourage families to drop off earlier, between 7:05 and 7:20 AM to ensure on-time arrival to school and class.

Celebrations in our Community - Diwali:

Diwali, pronounced “de-VAH-lee,” is India's biggest and most important holiday and is celebrated by more than a billion people all over the world. It is a five-day festival that begins on November 2nd this year, with the main day of celebration on Thursday, November 4th. Known as the Festival of Lights, it celebrates the Hindu New Year and is a celebration of the victory of light over darkness and the triumph of good over evil. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that celebrants light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.

A celebration of hope, happiness and peace, this festival is celebrated with sparklers and firecrackers, and fireworks are held in many places. At Diwali it is tradition to decorate and illuminate the home, visit the local temple for prayers, purchase new clothing, and share small gifts and sweets. Traditional Diwali food includes sweets such as syrupy gulab jamun balls. It is traditional to light diyas which are candleholders or clay lamps that are used for decoration, and homes and buildings are also decorated with rangoli decorations made with flowers, colored sand or rice, flour, or spices. Statues of Lakshmi, the four-armed Hindu goddess of prosperity, and of Ganesha, the Hindu lord of success usually referred to as the 'Elephant God,’ are also cherished and decorated with flowers in many homes. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that's also enjoyed by non-Hindu communities; Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists in India celebrate Diwali as well, but each faith has its own meaning and traditions.

We wish all of our Rocky Run families celebrating this week a Diwali that brings happiness, prosperity, and joy to you and all your family.

I welcome your feedback, questions and suggestions.  Please don't hesitate to reach out to me.  Enjoy the long weekend.

When discussing books, parents and students can learn from each other’s perspectives and begin to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences among themselves. This is a great opportunity to communicate with your teenager as they move forward in shaping an identity and in making good choices for the future. Please accept this invitation to support your child as a lifelong reader! To learn more about Parent Teen Book Club, click here for answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

Our first Parent Teen Book Club of the year will be on Thursday, December 9 at 7pm. We are offering the theme, Perspectives in Verse – 5 titles written in poetry format, known as Novels in Verse. The titles are listed below. Students will receive 2 copies of each book to bring home for reading prior to the discussions on December 9.

Wellness Screening - 7th Grade

RRMS Student Services is conducting an ACT Wellness Screening on November 9th and 10th  during Health/PE classes as part of the Signs of Suicide (SOS) ® Prevention Program for all 7th grade students.  The program has proven to be successful at increasing help-seeking behaviors by students concerned about themselves or a friend.

We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for depression, suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. Additionally, this parent information video provides key information about the SOS program itself. Contact your child's counselor for any questions.

Fairfax County Youth Survey - 8th Grade

The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. It provides a wealth of information about a variety of topics related to our youth that influence their physical and mental well being, from sleep and nutritional habits to substance abuse behaviors to symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts.

Read more about the Youth Survey on the FCPS website

Youth Survey administration dates at Rocky Run is November 16 and 17 through Civics classes.

Families may choose to opt out their students. Students opted out will attend school regularly and will spend their Civics class period completing or reviewing class work. You can access links to the FCPS Youth Survey opt-out forms in English, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Opt-out forms can be sent to the office, mailed, or emailed to Ms. Sandra Meador at srmeador@fcps.edu.
