CWES Weekly Happenings

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

Fall is a wonderful season--the days are short but full of activity! Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour Saturday night, and remember that your children may be walking home from school close to twilight beginning next week. They may also need some extra sleep as they adjust to the time change.

I hope you had an opportunity to connect with your child's teacher in a family conference over the past two teacher workdays, or that you have a conference scheduled soon. We are best able to meet your children's needs through a strong partnership with you.

Progress reports will be sent home soon as another method for communicating with you about your child's current performance in school. Please remember that our use of standards-based reporting means that our students will not receive a traditional grade, but instead will receive a score to indicate the FREQUENCY of their demonstration of concepts and skills related to each standard taught each quarter:

1 = Seldom

2 = Sometimes

3 = Usually

4 = Consistently

Scores of 1 or 2 at this time of year, especially given the challenges of coming back to school for 5 full days a week, is to be expected for some standards. Students and teachers will work to increase the frequency of demonstrating these concepts and skills over the course of the year. Please be aware that final grades are not averages, but rather reflections of where students are at the conclusion of the school year.

You may also see two other codes for this first quarter if there are standards that have not yet been fully addressed:

NT = Not taught

NA = Not assessed

These standards will be taught and assessed in future quarters of the school year. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Our Storybook Character SCA Spirit Day was a wonderful way to wrap up the first quarter! Our teachers got into the spirit as well! Check out just a few of the photos of our amazing staff (some taken before and some during school) below.

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig, "Dr. L"

Ages 5-11 Vaccination Update

An FDA panel has recommended Pfizer’s low dose vaccine for children ages 5-11, which brings hope that we can add another layer of prevention for children during this pandemic. As we await a final decision, please know that Fairfax County Public Schools and our community partners including the Fairfax County Health Department, Inova Health System, and local pediatric groups, are working together to ensure that every family who wishes to vaccinate their children ages 5-11 will have access to the vaccine. For the latest information on our vaccination rollout plans, visit our website.
