1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Hello Woodson Community,

It is finally November, the month traditionally recognized for giving thanks.

Even through the challenges of the last 1.5 years, we have much to be thankful for; I for one, am thankful that you share your children with us at Woodson HS.  The kids truly make this job worth every second of the struggles I have felt through this pandemic.

Our teachers have been carrying a huge load this year. In this month of Thanksgiving, I encourage families to submit an FCPS Cares on behalf of a staff member who has had an impact your child or family. It is a quick form that only takes a couple of minutes to complete.

In addition, the annual Outstanding Employee nomination form is now open to recognize a Woodson staff member who has demonstrated exceptional work. Please see article #10 for more details.

Finally, I want to highlight the Hidden in Plain Sight presentation in article #5 below.  This is a highly recommended presentation for parents in our community.  I am a firm believer that we can never be knowledgeable enough about the current climate and what kids may be engaging in.  Please consider attending.

Have a wonderful Friday!  I hope to see some of you this weekend at the craft fair, play or game!

Dr. Floyd

An Adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this play will bring the Shakespearean comedy to life with an autumnal twist! This production is suitable for all ages and a perfect introduction to Shakespeare for young students. This comedy features clowning, fairies, and ridiculous antics, all while running about 100 minutes long! These students have worked incredibly hard on this production, so come out and support your Woodson Cavalier Drama department!

Sunday, November 7th – 6pm

Friday, November 12th-  7pm

Saturday, November 13th - 2pm and 7pm

New this year—the performance features a "pay what you can" sliding scale, with individual ticket price ranging from $5-$20. Please purchase a ticket for each individual seeing the show (including children & students), and choose the corresponding ticket price for each attendee that makes sense for you and your family. All proceeds will be invested back into the WTW Drama department to fund future shows, supplies, and educational events throughout the year so thank you in advance for your support! (If you are a household that would like to see the show and cannot afford the $5 ticket option, please reach out to the WTW Drama Theatre Director, Mr. Rushing, at csrushing@fcps.edu)

5. Hidden in Plain Sight - Parent Safety Presentation

A live presentation by Fairfax County Police Department

November 8th from  7 pm – 9 pm, Woodson Cafeteria A

The bedroom of an average teenager can look like a well-planned illusion. The trick to seeing through an illusion is knowing what is used to create that illusion. We recreate a complete typical teenager's bedroom and the first thirty minutes of the program invites the participants to "snoop" through the room to find items and objects that could indicate "risky behavior."

The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is an IN-PERSON interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, mental health concerns, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviors and more.

This is a hands-on learning adventure for PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ONLY! We guide you through a presentation that opens your eyes to what is right in front of you. This program begins with a setup of a teenager’s bedroom which includes close to 100 “red flags” that indicate risky behavior. Parents are encouraged to touch everything and identify our red flags. Times have changed since we were teenagers… do you think you can find them?

That is followed by an educational portion that includes a PowerPoint presentation detailing the red flag props that the room contained and how it is indicative of — or used in — risky behavior. We include up to date statistics and local trends, and law enforcement officers will share their experiences they have had in our community identifying risky behavior and helping to put kids on the right path to a healthy life. Let’s open the door to communicating with our teens!

Please RSVP to reserve your seat at this presentation.  RSVP through this SignUpGenius link.

Thank you, Veterans

16. How do I check out my student from school?

Please let the Attendance Office know if you need your student to leave school early.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form and have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.
  • Student brings a note to the Attendance Office before 9:45am. The student will be issued a pink pass to leave class at the appointed time. The note must include the following - student name, date and time of when student is leaving, and reason for early check-out, student ID, parent signature and contact number.
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 3. After leaving a message, please have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.

At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside.

If returning to school that same day, students must check in at the Attendance office before going back to class, even if it is between classes.

If one of the options above is not followed, we cannot guarantee a speedy checkout, so please make sure you notify the attendance office prior to picking up your son/daughter to ensure you make your appointment or commitment on time.

Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.

For full details on Attendance Procedures, please visit the Attendance page on the Woodson website.
