November PTSO Meeting!

NEXT PTSO MEETING - Tuesday, November 9; 6:00 p.m. streaming on Google Meet

Highly Recommended:  Hidden in Plain Sight

A live presentation by Fairfax County Police Department

November 8th from  7 pm – 9 pm, Woodson Cafeteria A

The bedroom of an average teenager can look like a well-planned illusion. The trick to seeing through an illusion is knowing what is used to create that illusion. We recreate a complete typical teenager's bedroom and the first thirty minutes of the program invites the participants to "snoop" through the room to find items and objects that could indicate "risky behavior."

The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is an IN-PERSON interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, mental health concerns, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviors and more.

This is a hands-on learning adventure for PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ONLY! We guide you through a presentation that opens your eyes to what is right in front of you. This program begins with a setup of a teenager’s bedroom which includes close to 100 “red flags” that indicate risky behavior. Parents are encouraged to touch everything and identify our red flags. Times have changed since we were teenagers… do you think you can find them?

That is followed by an educational portion that includes a PowerPoint presentation detailing the red flag props that the room contained and how it is indicative of — or used in — risky behavior. We include up to date statistics and local trends, and law enforcement officers will share their experiences they have had in our community identifying risky behavior and helping to put kids on the right path to a healthy life. Let’s open the door to communicating with our teens!

Please RSVP to reserve your seat at this presentation.  RSVP through this SignUpGenius link.

Insider’s Guide to College Admissions Tests - Wednesday, November 3rd, 8:00 pm EDT

Financial Aid 101 - November 16, 2021 at 8:00 pm EDT

The cost of a college education continues to rise which may lead some families to assume college is too expensive for them. However, the Financial aid 101 webinar will help families understand what the actual costs are and more importantly, discover ways to pay for a college education. In addition, we will cover the financial aid forms needed and ways to simplify the process of applying for aid.

Understanding Athletic Recruiting - Wednesday, Dec 1st, 7:00 pm EST

Athletic recruiting is one of the more confusing processes for counselors, students, and their families because it involves a tricky intersection of parent expectations, student aspirations, coach idiosyncrasies, and conflicting league policies. This program examines recruiting from an educational standpoint to learn how counselors can “coach” students and families on how to ask the right questions, self-recruit to achieve their athletic goals, and avoid the “Here’s How to Win a Scholarship” distractions from popular media and for-profit recruiting services. We will include the latest trends in athletic recruiting, including specialization, early commitments, the rise of club sports, the nuances of NESCAC and Ivy league recruiting, the accelerated timeline, and the impact of the pandemic on recruiting from both the coaches’ and students’ perspectives.

WTW CAVS SPORTS UPDATES

Cavs Varsity Fall Sports

Woodson Ice Hockey Club

The Woodson Ice Hockey Club had its first underclassmen game in at least the past few years.  Woodson played Robinson and the two teams battled to a hard fought 8 to 8 tie.  Carson Edington led Woodson scorers with a hat trick (3 goals) and Henry Persky added two goals. The regularly scheduled game for 11/5 against Hayfield/South County is being rescheduled due to staffing challenges for Hayfield/South County.  Woodson will play a scrimmage against a “to be'' determined opponent at Mount Vernon Ice Rink at 6:30 on Friday night, so the WIHC invites fans to come out and support the event. Cost of entry is free!

Mount Vernon Ice Rink Address:  2017 Belle View Blvd, Alexandria, VA

Football

Woodson was defeated by Lake Braddock 55-7 this week.  Aidan Dash had a touchdown pass to Cameron Funaro.  The final regular season game for Woodson will be Senior Night at home this week on Friday vs Alexandria City.

Field Hockey

Woodson beat Hayfield 2-0 in its first VHSL 6C Regional playoff game on Tuesday. Elia Kim scored first with an assist by Elizabeth Stribling. Alex Walrath tallied the second goal off of a rebounded slam by Julia Oleyar.

The Cavaliers lost to a skilled, physical, and acrobatic Fairfax team, 2-0 in the VHSL 6C Regional quarterfinal game on Thursday. Elia Kim provided an offensive spark for the Cavs, while Caitlin Deer and AJ Ingson made critical saves.

Woodson Crew Pre Season Training

Vaccination Information for Student Athletes

Students who are 16 years of age or older (age as of November 8 for the Winter Sports season) and want to participate in athletics will need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have either a medical or religious exemption. Unvaccinated students who are 12-15 years of age must provide a weekly negative COVID-19 test to be eligible to participate in team activities.

Submitting Proof of Vaccination

Student athletes can submit their proof of Covid-19 vaccination to their school. Students will need to either show their vaccination card to authorized school personnel or provide clear documentation via an electronic format of the vaccination card or photocopy to the authorized school personnel. Please submit the copy of your students vaccination to Ms. Cooke, Athletic Trainer, via email at jmcooke@fcps.edu.

Religious Exemption

Student athletes (both middle and high school) can submit the Religious Exemption form to their school. The form must be notarized and should be submitted directly to Ms. Pugnetti (alpugnetti@fcps.edu) in the Woodson Student Activities Office. Please use the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption form. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to religious reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test weekly. Details on who to submit a weekly negative COVID-19 test to will be forthcoming.

Medical Exemption

Student athletes can submit the medical exemption information to the Woodson Student Activities Office, Ms. Pugnetti alpugnetti@fcps.edu. They will need to provide documentation of a medical exemption from their physician. Students can do this through a letter from their doctor (on the doctor’s office letterhead) stating the student has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving the Covid-19 Vaccine. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented health or medical reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test weekly. Details on who to submit a weekly negative COVID-19 test to will be forthcoming.

Get to know the Woodson Library and how it can help your student!

Hello from the Woodson Library.

The Library is busy scheduling classes for research projects but did you know we also meet individually with students in person or by email to help them find resources?

Students can stop by during learning seminar, afterschool or email us their request for articles. We will send the students' research articles for them to choose from for their project. The Library has had positive feedback from teachers and the students stating how this is a real-time saver. We are hoping this service will allow students to focus on completing their projects in a timely manner.

If you are interested in learning more about the Woodson Library or how to use the Woodson databases to help your student, please email the Woodson Librarians:  Lisa Muir (lkmuir@fcps.edu) or Sharon Anderson (msanderson@fcps.edu) to schedule a time.

Thank you from the Woodson Librarians
