PENGUINS CAN SOAR

School Expectations

Franconia Penguins can soar to new heights!  This video reminds all Franconia Penguins of our expectations while we are at school together.  Please consider watching it with your Penguin at home.  Discussing school expectations with your child at home gives students the opportunity to share their school experiences with you.  Reviewing school routines while at home also serves as a helpful reminder to students of appropriate behavior at school.

lost

LOST & FOUND

Is your child missing something?

Lost and found items will be laid out on tables in the front lobby starting Friday, 10/29, after dismissal.  The items will be removed from the tables by Wednesday morning (11/3).

On your way to parent/teacher conferences, stop by and see if you can find your child's missing item(s).

counselor

GUIDANCE TOPICS FOR OCTOBER

From our Counselors, Veronica Guillion (vguillion@fcps.edu) and Leslie Fry (lrcalhounfry@fcps.edu).

Kinder/First grades: Read-aloud: “Have You Filled a Bucket Today.”  Students will create a class and individual plan on how they can be a bucket filler.

Second/Third Grade: Read-aloud: “Buckets, Dippers, and Lids.”  Students will focus on how to use their “lid” when someone/themselves is dipping into their buckets.  We will create a plan on how to keep their buckets full of happiness.

Fourth/Fifth Grades: For the Month of October we will be working on empathy.  We will discuss what empathy is, how we show others empathy and what it means to be an empathetic person (WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE).  We will briefly touch on how we only see peoples behaviors, but like the iceberg, there is so much more to a person’s life than what we see on the surface.  We never know what challenges others face, so always treat others with kindness and empathy.  Empathy changes the brain of the giver and the receiver so it’s a good thing all the way around.

Sixth Grade: FCPS required lesson: Empathizing with those who are being bullied. Students will identify different ways to show empathy.

yearbook

YEARBOOK COVER CONTEST

All Franconia students are invited to participate in our yearbook cover competition. Please use a white 8 x 11 sheet of paper and colored pencils. On the back of the paper, write your first and last name, teacher's name, and grade level. This year's yearbook theme is:

Penguins Returning Strong!

Your cover designs should be related to the theme.  Please include Franconia Elementary 2021-2022 on the cover and remember to check your spelling!

Designs are due to your homeroom teacher by:

Friday, October 29

Things to consider when designing your cover:

  1. Draw your picture with a pencil first.
  2. When coloring, use colored pencils only.
  3. Your design should be "portrait" view (not landscape).
  4. Remember to use COLOR to really make your picture pop! (don’t have a lot of white space)

Good luck!

impact

Federal Impact Aid

ALL FAMILIES ARE ASKED TO COMPLETE THIS FORM, REGARDING OF MILITARY STATUS.

  • Each student has a form with their name on it, so if you have more than one child at Franconia, there will be a form for each of them.
  • Every student receives this form, regardless of military status.
  • For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school.  If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, only check the boxes in Section 3.

All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5.

All results are confidential.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Notification should be made by 9:00am on the day of the change.

  • Absence
  • Late arrival
  • Planned early pick-up or mid-day appointment (pick-up and return)
    • If your child needs to be picked up unexpectedly, please call the office in advance of your arrival

Below are the 3 options by which to notify the school office (choose one option):

Please do this IN ADDITION to contacting your child's teacher.  There could be times when the teacher is absent and by also contacting the office, the information will be properly noted.
