Book Character Pumpkins!
It’s October, and that means there are pumpkins everywhere! Let’s bring this symbol of the season into our school as we celebrate some of our favorite books! We are inviting your family to participate in a Book Character pumpkin decorating event!
Event rules are below:
- Choose any book that is a favorite of your family. Have a book talk discussion and review the characters, setting and plot of the fiction story, or the topic of a non-fiction book.
- Pick a character from the story or a topic from a nonfiction book and decorate a pumpkin to look like that character or topic.
- You may use a real pumpkin or a foam pumpkin.
- To decorate, use glue, paper, paint, markers, fabrics and any other craft materials you would like, but please DO NOT CARVE the pumpkin in any way!
- Bring your pumpkin to the school library on October 21st or 22nd with the attached form filled out. Place the pumpkin on the top of one of the shelves with the form placed next to your pumpkin.
- Students will bring pumpkins home on Friday, October 29th.
We look forward to seeing your family’s creations!
CogAT Testing
In an effort to obtain additional information about your child, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will be administered to grade 3 and some students in grades 4-6. It is important that your child attend school on these days, if possible. If your child must miss school during this time period and your child does not have another ability test result in their student record, they will have an opportunity to take another ability test later this fall. Below is the schedule for testing. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Haider, school testing coordinator at nfhaider@fcps.edu or Mrs. Sesso, Advanced Academics Resource teacher at vmssesso@fcps.edu
iReady Screener
The online iReady assessment (also known as the universal screener) provides an initial view of all students’ foundational skills to help teachers identify students who may have challenges in reading or mathematics. More information about the assessment can be found on the FCPS Universal Screener Parent Notification webpage.
Deadline to Return Impact Aid Forms Is November 5
FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid by November 5. Returning this form is really important, because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all FCPS schools and centers—but only if you complete the form.
For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5. All results are confidential.
Watch this video to learn more about the Federal Impact Aid Form.
