Dear Fairfax,

The end of October is quickly approaching and with that comes the end of the 1st quarter of school.  I encourage you to check ParentVue to understand where your student currently stands in each of their classes and reach out to teachers directly with any questions you may have. There will be a 2-hour early dismissal on Friday, October 29 and student holidays on November 1st and 2nd.

On Monday night, current and former FHS students, teachers, and counselors met with the Fairfax City School Board to share their experiences with the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at FHS. The AVID College Readiness System is designed to increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in higher education and in their lives beyond high school. Many AVID students are first-generation college students.  The student speakers were articulate and passionate about sharing their positive experiences with the city school board. I was so proud of them and their accomplishments!

Congratulations to Delaney Adams, Taylor Park, and Cailyn Park who qualified for the VHSL Girls State Open Golf Tournament. The girls compete on Monday, October 25th in Harrisonburg at Heritage Oaks Golf Course. At the Occoquan Region Cheer Semi-Finals this past Wednesday, our Cheer team had another strong performance and advance on to Regional Finals which are Wednesday, October 27th at Hayfield Secondary. Congratulations goes out to our Field Hockey team who defeated Robinson Secondary 6-1 in last night’s Patriot District Championship! Field Hockey advances to the Region Tournament as the #1 seed and open up with Lewis HS on Tuesday at 7pm. If you are looking for something to do tonight, please join the LION NATION at tonight’s home football game. The Lions take on the Lake Braddock Bruins with kickoff at 7pm!

If you're looking for some great theater or music this week we have lots to offer! On Tuesday, October 26th at 7PM the Fairfax Academy Musical Theatre presents “Just Duet” and on Thursday, October 28th the Band/Orchestra Masquerade Concert will begin at 7 PM, costumes are encouraged!

I’m happy to share that after forwarding a parent request to investigate the need for a crossing guard at the intersection of Old Lee Highway and Lion Run, I have been informed by Fairfax City Police that a full time crossing guard will be at that location for both morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. We are so fortunate to partner with Fairfax City Police who moved quickly to ensure we keep our students and drivers safe.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,

Maureen
