1. AP Test Opt-Out Forms Due TODAY! Timeline and Fees

As part of the FCPS FY 2022 Approved Budget, FCPS is continuing to assess Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test fees. As in previous years, the fees for the first six AP/IB tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s).

FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt-out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt-Out form to be provided by the school. To assist in the decision-making process, students will be provided a report with their previous tests and current AP course enrollment. AP students must make Opt-Out decisions by October 22, 2021 and parents will be billed a non-refundable test fee in December 2021 for tests that exceed the six FCPS funded tests. For the 2021-2022 school year, there will be no spring cancellation option for AP exams.

2022 AP Testing

Reference the College Board 2022 AP exam dates site for dates of AP Exams. Due to the FCPS Cultural and Religious Observance day on May 3rd, no AP exams will be administered on this day. The AP Environmental Science and AP Psychology exams will be administered on the late testing date of May 17th.  All 2022 AP exams will be taken in school and will be taken in a paper/pencil format.

AP students who do not complete the Opt-Out form by October 22nd and cancel an AP exam will be assessed a $40 cancellation fee by the College Board.  AP students who register for an AP exam after November 10th will be assessed a $40 late registration fee by the College Board.

If you have any questions, please contact Woodson's Assessment Coordinator, Kathleen Guinee at kpguinee@fcps.edu.

2. Expunge Deadline: Friday October 29th

In accordance with the Virginia Board of Education regulations, FCPS Regulation 2408 permits parents of students who take a high school credit-bearing course in middle school to request that the grade be omitted from the student's high school transcript and the student not earn high school credit for the course.

Parents must make this request in writing no later than the end of the first nine weeks of the school year following completion of the course, Friday, October 29th.

The form to make this request, along with the process for making the request, is available at:  Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School or through your student’s school counselor.  Parents are strongly advised to discuss this decision with their student’s school counselor and the impact of expunging a course on desired high school diploma type and standard and verified credit requirements.

3. Federal Impact Aid Survey

Ask your student for the Federal Impact Aid form that was distributed during last week. If you need a new form, please have your student ask for one at the main office. Forms are due Thursday, November 4th!

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3 and sign/date the form. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by Thursday, November 4th. All results are confidential

More information is available online.

NEW News

4. Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon Woodson Community:

Just one more week until the end of the 1st quarter!  Please be sure to check SIS for grades as Schoology is not the official grade posting location.  Sometimes there are assignments in Schoology that do not go into SIS for grading as they are for practice and not a grade.  Therefore, please review your SIS ParentVUE account for the most up-to-date grading information.

Morning tardies are an issue.  Students are arriving in Kiss and Ride and the student parking lot well after 8:10am.  School begins at 8:10am and it is important that all students be in class on time.

We will be holding detentions for unexcused tardy students beginning second quarter. This consequence will be for unexcused tardy students in the morning and for students late to classes during the day.  Certainly the one off tardy will be excluded from detentions, however, when there is a pattern of tardiness, students will be expected to stay after-school for detention.

Woodson has late busses on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to help facilitate a ride home for after-school detentions. Since late busses do not arrive until 4:45pm, students will have time to see teachers for additional assistance while still serving detention.

I appreciate your support in helping our young scholars arrive to school on time!  We will continue to work with students on their arrival to classes throughout the school day.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Homecoming Parade, Pig Out, Football Game and Dance last week!  It was a tremendous success with so many parent volunteers to make it all happen.

Let’s make the last week of the quarter the best one yet!

Sincerely,

Dr. Floyd

5. SIS Availability

ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be down from 4pm on Friday, October 29th through Saturday, November 6th, at 6am for first quarter grading.

Vision Screening

6. Woodson Student Helping Students

Woodson junior, Deborah Sanni is one of the students from the Medical Assistant class at Falls Church Academy that is learning on the job by helping out the Fairfax County Health Department perform vision and hearing screenings on fellow FCPS students

The screenings are required for students in kindergarten, third, seventh, and tenth grades, but the COVID pandemic forced last year’s screenings to be postponed for those in virtual learning; so this year, there are hundreds of additional students being screened. The Medical Assistant students, along with Public Health nurses from the Fairfax County Health Department, are working together to get the job done.

Midautumn Night's Dream

7. Woodson Drama Presents: A Midautumn Night's Dream

An Adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this play will bring the Shakespearean comedy to life with an autumnal twist! This production is suitable for all ages and a perfect introduction to Shakespeare for young students. This comedy features clowning, fairies, and ridiculous antics, all while running about 100 minutes long! These students have worked incredibly hard on this production, so come out and support your Woodson Cavalier Drama department!

Tickets start as low as $5! You can purchase your tickets here

Performance Dates are Saturday, November 6th – 2pm and 7pm

Sunday, November 7th – 6pm

Friday, November 12th-  7pm

Saturday, November 13th - 2pm and 7pm

New this year—the performance features a "pay what you can" sliding scale, with individual ticket price ranging from $5-$20. Please purchase a ticket for each individual seeing the show (including children & students), and choose the corresponding ticket price for each attendee that makes sense for you and your family. All proceeds will be invested back into the WTW Drama department to fund future shows, supplies, and educational events throughout the year so thank you in advance for your support! (If you are a household that would like to see the show and cannot afford the $5 ticket option, please reach out to the WTW Drama Theatre Director, Mr. Rushing, at csrushing@fcps.edu)

Please note that the performance will be located outside in Woodson’s tiered Courtyard so dress warmly! As this is outdoors, masks are recommended for audiences, but not required. Not sure where to find the courtyard? No worries—we will be there to guide you. Plan for a total performance length of around 100 minutes with a 10 minute intermission, and bring money for hot cocoa!

8. Hidden in Plain Sight - Parent Safety Presentation

A live presentation by Fairfax County Police Department

November 8th from  7 pm – 9 pm, Woodson Cafeteria A

The bedroom of an average teenager can look like a well-planned illusion. The trick to seeing through an illusion is knowing what is used to create that illusion. We recreate a complete typical teenager's bedroom and the first thirty minutes of the program invites the participants to "snoop" through the room to find items and objects that could indicate "risky behavior."

The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is an IN-PERSON interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, mental health concerns, eating disorders, risky sexual behaviors and more.

This is a hands-on learning adventure for PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ONLY! We guide you through a presentation that opens your eyes to what is right in front of you. This program begins with a setup of a teenager’s bedroom which includes close to 100 “red flags” that indicate risky behavior. Parents are encouraged to touch everything and identify our red flags. Times have changed since we were teenagers… do you think you can find them?

That is followed by an educational portion that includes a PowerPoint presentation detailing the red flag props that the room contained and how it is indicative of — or used in — risky behavior. We include up to date statistics and local trends, and law enforcement officers will share their experiences they have had in our community identifying risky behavior and helping to put kids on the right path to a healthy life. Let’s open the door to communicating with our teens!

Please RSVP to reserve your seat at this presentation.  RSVP through this SignUpGenius link.

16. How do I check out my student from school?

Please let the Attendance Office know if you need your student to leave school early.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form and have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.
  • Student brings a note to the Attendance Office before 9:45am. The student will be issued a pink pass to leave class at the appointed time. The note must include the following - student name, date and time of when student is leaving, and reason for early check-out, student ID, parent signature and contact number.
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 3. After leaving a message, please have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.

At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside.

If returning to school that same day, students must check in at the Attendance office before going back to class, even if it is between classes.

If one of the options above is not followed, we cannot guarantee a speedy checkout, so please make sure you notify the attendance office prior to picking up your son/daughter to ensure you make your appointment or commitment on time.

Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.

For full details on Attendance Procedures, please visit the Attendance page on the Woodson website.
