Throughout this past week our students and staff have been honoring and celebrating the life of our school’s namesake, General Colin L. Powell. We started the week with Principal Luerssen addressing the students and staff on the school news program to share the sad news of General Powell’s passing. On Monday and Tuesday, following the Pledge of Allegiance, the Moment of Silence was dedicated to General Powell. All week our flag has been flown at half-staff in his honor.
On Tuesday morning, Principal Luerssen addressed the entire student body and staff by returning to the school news program with a special message. In this message she reminded the school community of General Powell’s visit to our school in 2013 to commemorate our 10th anniversary. She reminded everyone of the charge General Powell gave to the students at that time which was to show kindness, at all times, toward other people. This timeless message to show kindness toward others rings true today, and Principal Luerssen gave the current student body the same charge. Principal Luerssen shared, “Anyone can show up as a student, teacher, instructional assistant, food service worker, bus driver, custodian or office staff and only the GREAT ones show up with kindness each and every day.
General Powell’s address of the 2013 student body was then played for the students to watch to hear how he shared this message. It is clear the students took that messaging to heart because it has been outstanding to see kindness being carried out, in purposeful ways, all week. Students have been witnessed picking up dropped library books for one another, tying shoes for one another, helping with tasks in the classroom, playing nicely together, and so much more! It is great to continue to see General Powell’s legacy carry forward through this intentional kindness. We sure have amazing students here at our school!
To see other ways we have honored General Powell in our classrooms please see the media coverage below. As always, exciting learning experiences are happening at our school!
Over the months ahead we will be working together as a staff and school community to identify the ways in which we will honor General Powell school-wide. If you would like to be a part of this planning group, please email Chris Park, administrative assistant, at hepark@fcps.edu. As we get started meetings will occur virtually to accommodate for social distancing and ease of attendance. Dates and times are to be determined.

!!Warning!! Yearbook Coordinator Needed:
This year we need a Yearbook Coordinator: Yearbooks capture a moment in time and record, highlight, and commemorate the past of the school. More importantly, it provides a record for our children to reflect back upon when they possibly have a family of their own. Memories fade, but a yearbook can bring them back. Please don’t let this precious moment pass.
I have coordinated with last year’s year book coordinator, and she is willing to assist to help make the job easier for any volunteer. You will have help!
Design and layout of yearbook (on going)
- Coordinate Cover Contest (if applicable) and submit artwork to be drafted into cover (fall & winter)
- Following make up day, send class portrait data proofs to teachers to ensure everyone's name is spelled correctly (winter)
- Edit data to ensure everyone's name is spelled correctly (winter)
- Gather candid photos and upload to software (on going)
- Proof Yearbook for accuracy (spring)
- Promote Yearbook Sales (January - April)
- Distribute or organize distribution upon delivery (late May/early June)
!!ATTENTION!!
VP of Ways and Means (Second Vice President) still needed: The primary function of this position is to be creative and oversee / organize fund raising activities. If you are not already aware, most of the awesome events that we are able to have for our students, such as the spring ball, come from our success at fundraising. Because of this, the VP of Ways and Means is a crucial position to be filled. It’s probably the most fun too!
As a PTA Board Member, you will not only be supporting your own child’s education, but that of all of our children, as well as the Powell community. Moreover, you will be a vital part of the ongoing discussion with the district level administration about what is happening in our school, and will help to implement new plans and goals set forth by FCPS.
We need the VP Programs candidates ASAP! Have questions? Email Jeff, president@cpespta.org.
PTA Support: When you purchase from Amazon Smile you can directly support your childs education. In your Amazon smile account, just search for COLIN L. POWELL ELEMENTARY PTA and select. Please do not forget to bookmark your www.smile.amazon.com so you ensure continued support.
In addition to the aforementioned, the PTA is working on other ways for you to support the children. Expect to see spirit wear and other great items to be forthcoming for purchase.
