Message from Dr. Smith

Hello Bruin Families,

This week there were several opportunities to enjoy our middle school students performing with Chorus and Orchestra.  We had our first in-person MS Chorus concert, along with the Area Chorus, since COVID-19 began. Here is a link for one one of their songs from that night. Our MS Chamber Orchestra performed the National Anthem at this week’s School Board meeting. We are grateful to our Chorus and Orchestra Directors for making this a possibliilty and we want to celebrate the hard work our students put into performing for our communitiy and FCPS.

Next week we are excited to celebrate Homecoming Week with all our students, families, alumni and community.  Below you see some of the Advisory class door decorations contest we are doing as part of the activities.  There are several other events that we want to invite the community to including our family event on Thursday night with Trunk or Treat beginning at 5:30 pm followed by the outdoor movie experience at 6:30 pm featuring the film Halloweentown. These events are $5 per family and we hope to see many of you there.  Additional details of other activities throughout the week can be found below.

We end the 1st Quarter on Friday, October 29th.  Students will be on a 2-hour early release schedule on that day, which we have posted below.  Students are able to check StudentVue for an update on their grades and they are encouraged to contact teachers directly if they have any questions about assignments or their grades.

There is one additional topic that is important to bring to your atteniton, which is the COVID-19 screening teting for students.  This optional screening testing will begni the week of November 15. There's more detailed information in the FCPS Information section of this newsletter below.  You can also find more information about the COVID-19 testing on the FCPS website.

We hope to see you next week for any and all of our Homecoming festivities.  Please let us know how we can support your child’s needs as we close out the 1st Quarter.

United as Bruins,

Daniel W. Smith, Ed.D.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid Due November 5

Impact Aid forms were distributed to students this past week in Advisory classes.  FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's 4th period (Advisory) teacher. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5. All results are confidential.

Watch this video to learn more about the Federal Impact Aid Form.

More information is available online.

LB to Administer the Fairfax Youth Survey to 8th, 10th, and 12th Graders

In mid-November, Lake Braddock will be administering the Fairfax Youth Survey to all 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. It provides a wealth of information about a variety of topics related to our youth that influence their physical and mental well-being, from sleep and nutritional habits to substance abuse behaviors to symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts. The survey is anonymous and no individual information is reported.

More information about the survey can be found here.

If you do NOT want your child to participate in the survey, please print and complete the Opt Out Form. Please have your child return the form to their Sub-School.

Translated versions of the opt out form can be found here.

The results of this survey are published each year here and are used by school officials, youth leadership classes, youth-serving county agencies, and local non-profits to determine the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs offered in schools and communities. It is also used to identify changing trends and areas of need.

SR&R Reminder

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. There are two ways for parents to acknowledge that you have received the document:

1.  In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.  E-signing for one child will suffice for all siblings within the household. Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

2.  Download and sign the Parent Signature Sheet and please return the signed signature sheet to your child's subschool.

Signatures are due by October 29, 2021.

COVID-19 Testing for Students and Staff

In support of our commitment to safety, Middle and High Schools will begin optional COVID-19 screening testing students the week of November 15.

We will also provide no-cost testing for students participating in winter or spring sports and other activities requiring a physical. Student-athlete screening testing will begin the week of November 1. As a reminder, students are unable to participate in these activities unless they meet FCPS’ vaccination and testing requirements:

Student-athletes who are 16 and older

  • Are required to be fully vaccinated to participate in VHSL winter and spring sports or any activity requiring a physical, or have a medical or religious exemption.
  • Will be required to provide a weekly negative COVID-19 test, if they have a medical or religious vaccination exemption.
  • May not participate in the activity if they are not fully vaccinated and do not have an exemption.
  • May not participate in the activity if they have an exemption but do not have a negative COVID-19 test every week.

Student-athletes ages 12-15

  • Who are not fully vaccinated by choice or due to a medical or religious exemption will be required to provide a weekly negative COVID-19 test.

Routine testing is a highly recommended strategy to reduce COVID-19 transmission and keep our schools safe. Following recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 10% of students who are not fully vaccinated and have parent/guardian consent will be randomly selected for weekly testing.

Parent/guardian consent is required for students to be part of the testing pool. We will share more information about how to submit your child(ren)’s vaccination status and opt-in to testing soon.

Test results will be kept confidential. Parents/guardians will be able to review results through the secure vendor portal. Parents/guardians may select an option to share their child’s test results with FCPS. Sharing results with FCPS is optional.

More information about COVID-19 testing in FCPS can be found on the FCPS website.

Snow Days Will Stay: FCPS' Inclement Weather Approach for 2021-22

FCPS has announced updates to its inclement weather policy for the 2021-22 school year.

  • The first five inclement weather days will be traditional inclement weather days. These five days may occur consecutively due to a single weather event or may take place as several individual events.
  • Once these five days have been taken, FCPS will use the flexibility provided by the General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, wherever possible, to maintain continuity of learning.

How to Stay In Touch

Please stay in touch with us throughout the year by:

Attendance Lines

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Procedures for Picking Up a Student Early

  • Prior to 8:00 a.m., the student must present a note from the parent to their subschool office. Notes must include time of dismissal, reason for leaving, and a contact number. Parents of middle school students must also include the name of the person picking the student up. Please note that this person must be listed as an emergency contact. At the time of early check-out, middle school parents must come in Entrance 1 and meet their student at the security desk. Anyone picking up a middle school student must bring a photo ID with them. High school parents may pick up students outside Entrance 1.
  • Notes are strongly preferred for early check-out, but if a parent is unable to send a note with the student, the parent should call the subschool office as early as possible. All calls will be confirmed by callback to a phone number on the emergency care card. Regrettably, if the parent did not send a note with the student, the parent will be required to park, come into the school to furnish a note, and pick up the student. Without advance notice provided by a note, there may be a wait until our staff is able to locate the student, particularly if the student is at lunch or in a physical education class. We further regret that without advance notice, we are unable to accommodate requests for early dismissal after 2:15 pm.
  • In either case, students must check out at the subschool office when leaving school and check in with the security desk upon return. Students who leave school without checking out properly will be marked unexcused and may face disciplinary action (if returning to school, students are also subject to search). Students must contact all teachers of any class to be missed.

Read our full Attendance procedures at our website.

Late Bus Information

Late bus days are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Buses will pick up students in the front of the building with a departure time of approximately 4:45 pm.  Please check  StudentVue and ParentVue for your student's late bus number and stop.
