Message from the Principal

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Welcome to Fall! How wonderful to have that crisp feel in the air and to enjoy some lunch outside in the tent! We continue to work and play together as a community. Pizza Bingo was a success on Friday night, and we thank the volunteers and the teachers who came out to support that effort, particularly, Ms. Burdett who emceed the event.

Teachers continue to implement tiered prevention strategies in their rooms. Please remember that asynchronous assignments and live streaming are reserved for students who are paused due to Covid restrictions. At this time, we cannot include other students who may be absent in a day, as that adds additional work to the teachers’ schedules. Thank you for your help with this effort.

Veteran’s Day: Many of you know that we usually celebrate our veterans with an assembly in early November. Due to Covid restrictions, we won’t be able to host our usual assembly inside, but we are planning to honor our veterans. Please be on the lookout for information coming soon on this important commemoration.

Substitute Teachers: Some members of our Wolftrap families have started substituting at Wolftrap. We like to build a list of available substitutes to work if a teacher must be out. It is true that subs really do save the day! FCPS is looking for kind and caring substitute teachers to ensure our students continue to thrive when teachers need to be out of the building. Substitute teaching is a great opportunity for stay-at-home parents, retirees, college students, and anyone who wants a flexible work schedule. Subs save the day- apply today! https://www.fcps.edu/careers/career-opportunities/substitute-teaching-opportunities

Impact Aid forms: FCPS is eligible to apply for federal Impact Aid grant funds. Impact Aid is a federal formula grant program designed to assist local school districts that enroll federally connected students. Every year, we send out a survey to help identify any students with federal connections to ensure that FCPS can obtain its fair share of these funds. Please return the Impact Aid forms that were sent home as soon as possible. Please contact the office if you have any questions. Thank you!

Student Pictures: Student pictures previously purchased will be distributed this week. Families can still purchase prints online at  https://vando.imagequix.com/g1000874085. Use your student's ID number when prompted for the online code. The picture make-up day is October 28th. More information will be coming on this makeup day.

Digital Citizenship: Our new SBTS, Ms. Michelle Mussen, is organizing our digital citizenship week. Students will be completing daily activities that promote their digital well-being. Plus, they'll reflect on how they can use technology to be a positive influence in their community. Use these conversation starters to help your kids talk about their digital lives:

Student Rights & Responsibilities: Parents should review Student Rights and Responsibilities at www.fcps.edu/srr . Parent/Guardians can acknowledge receipt of the SR&R in ParentVue in your child’s SIS account or sign the Parent Signature Sheet to acknowledge that you have received this document. Please e-sign through ParentVue or return the signed signature sheet to school by October 29, 2021.

Thank you for all that you do to support Wolftrap.

Warmly,

Dr. Maggie Grove

Principal

Wofltrap PTA

Last week brought a fully-packed week of events from the PTA. We started the week with an engaging and educational experience with Family Science Night hosted by the Children's Science Center. We then closed out the week with a gorgeous and exciting evening on the field for Outdoor Pizza Bingo Night. Thank you to all our volunteers, both parents and teachers, for the hard work they put into these events and programs for our school community! Check out our Volunteer Shoutout section in this Connection as we give thanks to those who give their time to our school.

As we transition to Fall, we have some wonderful events and programs on the horizon. Our committees can always use some extra hands, and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved, including upcoming interest meetings for the Book Fair and the 5k. Don't hesitate to get involved! It's a great way to meet other families while doing great things for our students and school. See all the details below or reach out to president@wolftrappta.org to get involved.

Our Membership Drive will continue this Fall as we hope to get more families supporting the work of the PTA. To date, we have 47% of our families showing their support by becoming members. Thank you to those families for their generosity! If you have not yet joined the PTA, we hope you will consider pledging your support. To date, the PTA has provided over $20,000 in educational resources to our students and has put on a number of social and educational events. Please consider purchasing a $25 PTA membership and help support our continued work in the school.

Mark your calendars for our first evening PTA meeting of the year on Nov. 3rd, and have a great week!

2021-2022 PTA Board:
Corrine Fields, President (president@wolftrappta.org)
Debbie Rhoda-Choate, President-Elect (presidentelect@wolftrappta.org)

Volunteer Shout-outs

The PTA is so fortunate to have such amazing volunteers who help lead so many committees and programs at our school. This week we wanted to give special shoutouts to those we have not yet had a chance to celebrate:

  • A huge "Thank You!" to Kerry Lombard for leading our Outdoor Pizza Bingo event! She reimagined the entire event for this year, and thanks to her hard work the event was not only incredibly fun but was a successful fundraiser for the PTA.
  • An enormous amount of gratitude to Laura Morrow for leading the raffle portion of Bingo Night. Her novel ideas and seamless execution led to an exciting raffle event!
  • Kudos to Liz Finnerty for bringing Walking Wednesdays back to Wolftrap. Thanks for getting our students excited about walking and biking to school!
  • Thanks to Carla Espinosa for all her hard work on the Original Works program in COVID times. She has worked to ensure we will have options for all families to order merchandise through this program.
  • Thank you to Courtney McCreesh for helping lead the Odyssey of the Mind program for our students.

In addition to all our parent volunteers, our teachers and staff have stepped up in big ways to help make our last round of events successful.

  • Thank you to Dr. Grove and Ms. O'Donovan for being our guest scientists at Family Science Night
  • Thanks to Mrs. Burdett, Ms. Kwon, Mrs. Robb, Ms. May, Dr. Grove, and Ms. Harlan for helping call numbers at Bingo Night
  • Thanks to Ms. Mallino for her hard work on the Original Works program
  • Thanks to Mrs. Burdett for helping lead the Odyssey of the Mind program

Thanks to all these volunteers for giving your time to make our PTA events/committees happen. Reach out to president@wolftrappta.org if you would like to volunteer for any of our events or programs.

Walking Wednesdays!

Caffe Amouri

Wednesday October 6th was Wolftrap’s first Walking Wednesday. Turn out was great but  we hope to continue to do better!!

Walking Wednesday is every Wednesday during the school year. Encourage your child to walk or bike to school and come have a cup of coffee courtesy of Caffe Amouri!

Each week we will be keeping track of which grade has the most walkers/bikers. The grade with the most participation at the end of the month will win The Golden Sneaker Award and be recognized on WTRP!!

In an effort to be green…. Parents are encouraged to bring their own coffee cups!

Teacher's Appreciation

Our wonderful teachers and school staff have been working tirelessly to keep our school running and our children safe. To recognize their ongoing efforts, the teacher appreciation committee is organizing a monthly event for all teachers and staff. Each month a different grade level will be the sponsor.

This month, the fourth grade will be stocking the pantry in the teacher's lounge with a variety of snacks and beverages. To make this easy on parents, we are asking parents of fourth graders to contribute $5-10 (or whatever they feel comfortable with) via Venmo to @michelle-scalise-5 or @wrosner by October 20th. We will be doing a Costco run to purchase bulk items for the teachers and staff to enjoy.

If you have any questions or would like to contribute in another way, please contact mzscalise@gmail.com or wendy.l.rosner@gmail.com. Thank you!
