1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon and Happy Homecoming Week, Woodson!

I hope you will join us for the Homecoming Parade this afternoon.  The parade will begin at 4:30pm at Woodson HS.  The parade continues across Pickett onto Starlit Ponds, winds over to Olley with a right turn on Chestnut Knolls Dr.  We meander through the neighborhood and end up on Whitacre at Barcarat Dr. Our final stop is back at Woodson HS for the Pig-Out and then the football game versus our cross town rival, Fairfax HS at 7pm.

Please know the Homecoming Dance is Saturday night from 8-11pm and it will have a DJ outside, on the softball/Pickett side of the school.

I want to take a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication our staff members put in each day. They have been working hard to connect with students, plan engaging lessons and collaborate with one another. If you would like to acknowledge a Woodson staff member, we invite you to submit your story through FCPS Cares.

I wish our whole Woodson community a wonderful Homecoming weekend.

Sincerely,

Dr. Floyd

3. Federal Impact Aid Survey

Ask your student for the Federal Impact Aid form that was distributed during 3rd period today. Forms are due Thursday, November 4th!

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3 and sign/date the form. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by Thursday, November 4th. All results are confidential

More information is available online.

Students in grades 9 and 10 take the AMC 10.  All others take AMC 12.

6. Virtual Family Education Night - Learn about Teen Substance Abuse

On Thursday, October 21st at 7pm, the Family Engagement Region Representative from Region 5 will preset a family education night on teen substance abuse.

During this virtual Zoom meeting, families will meet the FCPS Substance Abuse Prevention Specialists and learn more about drugs and addiction.

RSVP to receive the Zoom link.  Contact Angela Aldave at avaldave@fcps.edu with questions.

7. AP Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees

As part of the FCPS FY 2022 Approved Budget, FCPS is continuing to assess Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test fees. As in previous years, the fees for the first six AP/IB tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s).

FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt-out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt-Out form to be provided by the school. To assist in the decision-making process, students will be provided a report with their previous tests and current AP course enrollment. AP students must make Opt-Out decisions by October 22, 2021 and parents will be billed a non-refundable test fee in December 2021 for tests that exceed the six FCPS funded tests. For the 2021-2022 school year, there will be no spring cancellation option for AP exams.

2022 AP Testing

Reference the College Board 2022 AP exam dates site for dates of AP Exams. Due to the FCPS Cultural and Religious Observance day on May 3rd, no AP exams will be administered on this day. The AP Environmental Science and AP Psychology exams will be administered on the late testing date of May 17th.  All 2022 AP exams will be taken in school and will be taken in a paper/pencil format.

AP students who do not complete the Opt-Out form by October 22nd and cancel an AP exam will be assessed a $40 cancellation fee by the College Board.  AP students who register for an AP exam after November 10th will be assessed a $40 late registration fee by the College Board.

If you have any questions, please contact Woodson's Assessment Coordinator, Kathleen Guinee at kpguinee@fcps.edu.

10. Woodson Junior Coordinates Computer Building Workshop

Northern Virginia Magazine published an article on Woodson High School junior Ian Wallace’s computer building workshop, which he led at Annandale High school in conjunction with ESOL Department Chair Meredith Hedrick and other AHS faculty.

https://northernvirginiamag.com/family/education/2021/10/08/eagle-scout-computer-workshop/

Through the project, eight AHS students who recently moved to the U.S. from other countries constructed their own desktop computers using spare parts Ian collected through a neighborhood computer recycling drive. In several cases, the AHS students shared they were bringing home their family’s first desktop computer – and how cool it was to tell their parents they constructed it themselves. One student, now at Northern Virginia Community College in their honors program for nursing, said it would be helpful for her college coursework too. Another said it made him consider a career in computer programming.

14. How do I check out my student from school?

Please let the Attendance Office know if you need your student to leave school early.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form and have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.
  • Student brings a note to the Attendance Office before 9:45am. The student will be issued a pink pass to leave class at the appointed time. The note must include the following - student name, date and time of when student is leaving, and reason for early check-out, student ID, parent signature and contact number.
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 3. After leaving a message, please have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.

At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside.

If returning to school that same day, students must check in at the Attendance office before going back to class, even if it is between classes.

If one of the options above is not followed, we cannot guarantee a speedy checkout, so please make sure you notify the attendance office prior to picking up your son/daughter to ensure you make your appointment or commitment on time.

Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.

For full details on Attendance Procedures, please visit the Attendance page on the Woodson website.
