Our local chapter, Lane’s Mill, of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is hosting the annual American History Essay Contest.
The 2021 – 2022 essay topic is “The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.”
Lane’s Mill is working with several elementary schools in the area and will select one essay at each grade level, fifth and sixth grade, and will forward the winning essay to the District Level chair. A bronze medal and $25 will be awarded to the chapter winners in each grade, plus a Chapter Winner Certificate. The winners are also invited to come to a Lane’s Mill Meeting in February to read their essays. All participants receive a Certificate of Participation. There are additional awards possible. One essay at each grade level is selected as the District winner and forwarded to the American History State Chair. State level winners receive a silver medal; National level winners receive a gold pin and monetary award at the Continental Congress in Washington, D.C in June of 2021.

Students from Mrs. Lynch’s and Mrs. Kang’s 3rd grade classes recently went LIVE on Fairfax County Public Schools’ program “Meet the Author”. Mrs. Smith, our school librarian, worked with the producers of the show to help organize student participation. The show featured author Kat Zhang who wrote Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao and Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon. Student prepared for the show by reading the stories, developing questions to ask the author, and creating their own dragons to be featured on the show. The best part…they didn’t know they were live until after the show ended!! What a great surprise!

Centreville High School SGA is hosting its homecoming parade on Friday, October 22nd from 4:30-5:30pm! Students and parents interested in watching the parade can arrive on the route around 4:15 pm if they are interested in watching.
If you have any other questions please email cvhsparade@gmail.com.
While daily class assignments may be posted in Schoology, asynchronous learning opportunities are required to be available when students have been paused, are in quarantine or are in isolation due to COVID-19.
-
PAUSED (A pause to in-person instruction is a short-term safety measure used by FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) to allow time to investigate and determine the safest way to address a positive case within our school community; student may not report for in-person instruction while FCHD verifies vaccination status and completes contact tracing; This flowchart best explains what happens when there is a pause)
-
QUARANTINED (student may not report for in-person instruction because student was identified as a close contact with someone with COVID-19; not fully vaccinated students identified as a close contact remain home for 14 days; verified fully vaccinated students that are asymptomatic may return to in-person learning with approval by FCHD or medical provider)
-
ISOLATED (student may not report for in-person instruction; isolation is in response to someone testing positive for COVID-19 and they may not return until 1. It has been 10 days AND 2. Fever-free for 24 hours w/o fever-reducing medication AND 3. Symptoms are getting better)
To provide the opportunity for these students to remain on pace with their peers while they are out of school, asynchronous learning materials must be provided for students who are well enough to engage in schoolwork. Materials should be provided beginning on day 2 of the absence and include classwork from the 4 core with a focus on math and language arts.
Students on an extended absence due to COVID-19 should be directed by their teacher to visit Schoology to access the asynchronous learning materials. Parents may contact the teacher to request to pick up the materials in hard copy from the school.
The Schoology Calendar is an important, organizational element for student courses and groups. It keeps events and due dates organized and easily accessible. When you are in the Student View, you can access your student’s Schoology Calendar by clicking on the Calendar icon in the top menu bar. This will allow you to view events and due dates by the month, week, or day. Each item is color-coded depending on the courses, groups, school, or personal events. Due dates for assignments, assessments and important course related events are automatically added to your student’s calendar and managed by the instructor. (Your student can add their own items, appointments, and reminders to the calendar.)Learn more: http://bit.ly/schoologycalendar

!!Warning!! Yearbook Coordinator Needed:
This year we need a Yearbook Coordinator: Yearbooks capture a moment in time and record, highlight, and commemorate the past of the school. More importantly, it provides a record for our children to reflect back upon when they possibly have a family of their own. Memories fade, but a yearbook can bring them back. Please don’t let this precious moment pass.
I have coordinated with last year’s year book coordinator, and she is willing to assist to help make the job easier for any volunteer. You will have help!
Design and layout of yearbook (on going)
- Coordinate Cover Contest (if applicable) and submit artwork to be drafted into cover (fall & winter)
- Following make up day, send class portrait data proofs to teachers to ensure everyone's name is spelled correctly (winter)
- Edit data to ensure everyone's name is spelled correctly (winter)
- Gather candid photos and upload to software (on going)
- Proof Yearbook for accuracy (spring)
- Promote Yearbook Sales (January - April)
- Distribute or organize distribution upon delivery (late May/early June)
!!ATTENTION!!
VP of Ways and Means (Second Vice President) still needed: The primary function of this position is to be creative and oversee / organize fund raising activities. If you are not already aware, most of the awesome events that we are able to have for our students, such as the spring ball, come from our success at fundraising. Because of this, the VP of Ways and Means is a crucial position to be filled. It’s probably the most fun too!
As a PTA Board Member, you will not only be supporting your own child’s education, but that of all of our children, as well as the Powell community. Moreover, you will be a vital part of the ongoing discussion with the district level administration about what is happening in our school, and will help to implement new plans and goals set forth by FCPS.
We need the VP Programs candidates ASAP! Have questions? Email Jeff, president@cpespta.org.
PTA Support: When you purchase from Amazon Smile you can directly support your childs education. In your Amazon smile account, just search for COLIN L. POWELL ELEMENTARY PTA and select. Please do not forget to bookmark your www.smile.amazon.com so you ensure continued support.
In addition to the aforementioned, the PTA is working on other ways for you to support the children. Expect to see spirit wear and other great items to be forthcoming for purchase.
