Dear Flint Hill Family,

We hope you are enjoying your long weekend with your children!

Tomorrow, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, our staff will be participating in a session where we will focus on our ESSER plan, including how we will maximize the use of our ESSER funding to intervene and support learning across grade levels, as well as refine our focus for our School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP). In addition, teachers in grades K-2 will be participating in a Phonics workshop, topped off by a K-3/SPED learning opportunity with our online partner, Lexia

Please see our section, Tech Talk, for links to additional online resources that can support your child learning at home!

Warmly,

Dr. Jennifer Hertzberg, Principal

Mr. Ross Baker, Assistant Principal

DedicatED: For Parents and Teachers

From Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day

"By grappling with the question of who we celebrate, and why, history teachers can help students navigate the complexities of the past."

  1. The trend toward questioning Columbus Day has expanded. More schools, cities, and institutions...have adopted Indigenous Peoples Day instead.
  2. Even as the topic is still contested, more students are aware of the problematic nature of Columbus — which again speaks to the larger trends in our country of critically examining the past. But in critiquing Columbus, we should not dismiss his significance.
  3. Indigenous Peoples Day offers a powerful way to think about U.S. history — but studying Indigenous people shouldn’t be contained to just this time of year.

Please consider reading this article, from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, to learn more about the shift in not only renaming this day, but also to learn more about the narrative teachers and parents can consider when teaching about the significance of this holiday and the people who are impacted by it.

Tweet of the Week!

We continue to highlight learning experiences that support the acquisition of Portrait of a Graduate attributes and skills across our community and Google classrooms.

Math workshop and differentiated stations are just one way teachers reflect the principles of Universal Design for Learning! Our students are #crticalandcreativethinkers while also having fun!

For more information on Portrait of a Graduate, ask your child how they are a communicator, collaborator, critical and creative thinker, goal-directed and resilient individual, or ethical and global citizen. Or, click here!
