Need money? The PTSO Grant Window is Open October 4th - October 22nd!

What is the grant program and how do I make a request?

Each year, in the fall and in the spring, members of the Woodson community (teachers, parents and students) can apply for "grant money" from the PTSO. We use a large portion of our membership dues to assist with supplying teachers, parents, students and staff with purchasing items or helping cover fees for events, etc.  Anyone who is part of the Woodson community can apply for a grant, and you do not have to be a member of the PTSO to do so. What have we helped with in the past?  Well, one year a student applied for funding to purchase 3 additional microwaves for the Woodson cafeteria since the lines were so long. Students requested funding assistance for the new Cavalier Mascot that you see at football games. The Computer Science Department asked for help funding stand up desks for computer project presentations, and a parent group asked for help funding a motivational speaker.  Eagle Scout and Girl Scout Gold Award candidates have also requested funding if their projects directly affected Woodson. Anything is worthy of a request if you think it will help the Woodson community at large, or some portion of it.

What you should know before requesting funds for your group or organization:

The Grant Committee will review all applications, and then will present the proposals and funding amounts to the PTSO general membership for voting. In its review, the Committee considers the following factors including but not limited to:

  • The degree of direct relationship to the student program of study.
  • The number of students that the proposal benefits (general student body or a sub-set).
  • The extent of impact on the total school community.
  • The efforts that your group made requesting funding from others (boosters, parent groups, etc), or fundraising efforts toward reaching your overall funding goal (car washes, bake sales, etc).

When can I apply?

The 2021 Fall grant window is 10/4 - 10/22/21.  There is a fall window and a spring window each year. The end date is firm so the committee has time to meet and discuss all of the requests, ask any follow up questions as needed, and then present the requests at the next PTSO meeting for voting.  Decisions will be emailed to all who requested grant money, whether awarded or not, after the PTSO meeting vote, which for the fall will be at the November meeting.

PTSO Officer Position Open - Fundraising Chair

The PTSO’s primary source of funding is memberships.  Fundraising efforts supplement the PTSO budget.  There are two main roles for the Fundraising Chair.  The first is organizing “Dinner Nights” at places like Chipotle and Potbelly.  The second is letter writing to medium and large-sized  companies like Booz Allen Hamilton, SAIC, MAG Aero, Interstate Movers, and Cox.   The latter is an effective donation generator.

All PTSO funding flows back into Woodson High School in the form of Teacher Grants, Staff Appreciation, Community Outreach, Field Trip Subsidization, and School Supplements.

The Fundraising Chair serves as the primary focal point for all fundraising activities. The time commitment is about 1 hour per week, averaged over the school year. If you are interested in volunteering, please get in touch with Miklos Kiss at wptsopres@gmail.com

Vaccination Information for Student Athletes

Students who are 16 years of age or older (age as of November 8 for the Winter Sports season) and want to participate in athletics will need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have either a medical or religious exemption. Unvaccinated students who are 12-15 years of age must provide a weekly negative COVID-19 test to be eligible to participate in team activities.

Submitting Proof of Vaccination

Starting Monday, October 4th, student-athletes can submit their proof of Covid-19 vaccination to their school. Students will need to either show their vaccination card to authorized school personnel or provide clear documentation via an electronic format of the vaccination card or photocopy to the authorized school personnel. Please submit the copy of your students vaccination to Ms. Cooke, Athletic Trainer, via email at jmcooke@fcps.edu.

Religious Exemption

Starting Monday, October 4th, student athletes (both middle and high school) can submit the Religious Exemption form to their school. The form must be notarized and should be submitted directly to Ms. Pugnetti (alpugnetti@fcps.edu) in the Woodson Student Activities Office. Please use the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption form. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to religious reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test weekly. Details on who to submit a weekly negative COVID-19 test to will be forthcoming.

Medical Exemption

Starting Monday, October 4th, student-athletes can submit the medical exemption information to the Woodson Student Activities Office, Ms. Pugnetti alpugnetti@fcps.edu. They will need to provide documentation of a medical exemption from their physician. Students can do this through a letter from their doctor (on the doctor’s office letterhead) stating the student has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving the Covid-19 Vaccine. Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented health or medical reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test weekly. Details on who to submit a weekly negative COVID-19 test to will be forthcoming.

Deadline for Medical and Religious Exemptions for Winter Sports Season

The Deadline for submitting medical and religious exemptions for the Winter season is Monday, November 1st. The exemption must be received by the November 1st deadline for students to participate in winter tryouts. This will allow enough time for those students with a medical or religious exemption to provide proof of their negative Covid-19 test that week so that they may participate in tryouts. As a reminder all students with a medical or religious exemption for receiving the Covid-19 vaccination must provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test weekly (more details as to who to submit weekly tests will be forthcoming).

Students with a Religious or Medical Exemption and Unvaccinated Students Aged 12-15 (Age as of November 8 for the Winter Season)

Unvaccinated students who are 12-15, or students with a Religious or Medical exemption must provide a negative test weekly to participate in team activities. Currently, FCPS is working on securing a vendor to assist with providing access to weekly testing for athletes. We will share more information as it becomes available.

Answers to Attendance Questions

How do I check out my student from school?

Please let the Attendance Office know if you need your student to leave school early.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form and have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.
  • Student brings a note to the Attendance Office before 9:45am. The student will be issued a pink pass to leave class at the appointed time. The note must include the following - student name, date and time of when student is leaving, and reason for early check-out, student ID, parent signature and contact number.
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 3. After leaving a message, please have your student pick up their pink checkout pass from the Attendance Office (E107) between classes or during lunch.

At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside.

If returning to school that same day, students must check in at the Attendance office before going back to class, even if it is between classes.

Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.

My student will be arriving late to school. How do I let Attendance know?

Please let the Attendance Office know if your student will arrive late to school.  You can notify Attendance 3 different ways:

  • Submit the online attendance form to report a late arrival or partial day absence.
  • Student brings a handwritten note from a parent or doctor with the reason for the late arrival. Please include the student’s name, time the student is coming to school, the reason for the tardy, a parent/guardian signature, the student ID, and contact phone number for follow-up.
  • Call the attendance line, 703-503-4800 and select Option 2. Please include the student’s name, time the student is coming to school and the reason for the tardy.
  • If a student does not have a note, he/she will be marked "unexcused tardy" and must present a note to the Attendance Office within 48 hours for the tardy to be changed to excused.

Valid tardiness reasons include illness, medical appointments or family emergency. The following will not be excused: oversleeping, power outages, car trouble, traffic, and missing the bus. Students will be given a pass to enter their assigned class after checking in at the Attendance office.

My student will be out for a college visit.  How do I let Attendance know?

For prearranged Absences (family, college trips, medical reasons), please notify the Attendance Office with the following:

  • Student must bring a written notice to the attendance office at least 5 days prior to the intended absence. Please include the student's name, dates of absences, and reason for the absence.
  • Student will receive a prearranged absence form for teachers to sign, list the assignments, and due dates.
  • Extended Absences: If a student requires long-term medical care, parents should contact their child's school counselor. To find out who your child's counselor is, check the Student Services staff list

For full details on Attendance Procedures, please visit the Attendance page on the Woodson website.
