Dear Fairfax,

The Homecoming Dance on Saturday night was outstanding! Over 800 students attended the event. The weather was perfect, the lights, bubbles, smoke, and music made for a rock concert environment. As the students left at the end of the evening so many shared how much they enjoyed it. The FHS leadership students most definitely outdid themselves!

Congratulations to the golf team who finished in 3rd place at the VHSL Region 6C Golf Tournament and a special shout out to Josh Duangmanee who earned the silver medal with a strong 2nd place finish. Good luck to Josh who will compete on Tuesday, October 12th in the VHSL State Golf tournament held in Williamsburg.  In the varsity cross country race last weekend, the girls team finished 11th out of 44 teams in a very competitive field. They were led by the dynamic Duo of Christina Elliott and Leilani Silva. The boys cross country runners are led by seniors Denwood and Edward Parish.  Last night, we celebrated our Volleyball Seniors and tonight at 7pm we will celebrate our Field Hockey seniors. Mark your calendars for October 22nd which will be our last SENIOR NIGHT of the fall season!

Beginning on Monday, October 11 there will be a dedicated phone line to report that your student or someone in your household has tested positive for COVID. Please call (703) 219-2227 and leave a message that includes your student(s) name and a phone number where you can be reached. A member of the administrative team will return your phone call.

As we continue to adjust to the regular school schedule, many of our students are having difficulty getting to their classes on time this year. Please be sure to read the message below from our Dean of Students and talk with your child about the importance of arriving to class on time.

A reminder that Monday, October 11th is a student holiday and on Wednesday, October 13th, freshmen will engage in asynchronous learning from their homes. Sophomores and Juniors will come to school to take the PSAT and seniors who registered in advance will take the SAT. Seniors not taking the SAT will not come to school on Wednesday and are encouraged to explore college/career options. Students in school on Wednesday will have a two hour early release with dismissal at 12:55 PM.

Wishing you a wonderful and restful weekend.

Best regards,

Maureen

Message from the Dean of Attendance Office

As a reminder, classes begin at 8:10AM this year.  All students are expected to be in their classrooms by 8:10AM.  Any student arriving after 8:10AM is considered tardy.  During the first block of the day (1st and 2nd Period) students arriving tardy between 8:10AM and 8:30AM are expected to report directly to their classroom where their teacher will mark them as Excused Tardy (with a pass or other verification for being late) or Unexcused Tardy (no verification of why the student is late).  This is to prevent long lines of students from accumulating at the attendance office and maximize instructional time.  After 8:30AM, students must check in at the Attendance Office (L103) to receive a pass to class.

  2. A note on a healthcare provider’s letterhead stating the date the Meningococcal vaccine was given.
  3. A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.

Fairfax Athletics

Winter & Spring Sport Info

Beginning November 8, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) requires student-athletes be vaccinated against COVID-19 for the winter and spring sports seasons as an additional safety measure to support our layered prevention strategies. An increase in positive COVID-19 cases in sports programs results in large numbers of students being paused from athletic participation and, more importantly, classroom instruction.

Vaccination Requirement

Students who are 16 years of age or older (age as of November 8 for Winter Season) who are unvaccinated and do not have either a medical or religious exemption will not be able to participate in team activities.  In addition, unvaccinated students who are 12 -15 years of age who do not provide a weekly negative Covid-19 test will not able to participate in team activities. Currently FCPS is working on securing a vendor to assist with providing access to weekly testing for athletes.  We will share more information as it becomes available.

Submitting Proof of Vaccination

Starting October 4, student athletes can submit their proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the Fairfax High School Athletic Training Office, attention Amanda Johnston, AEJohnston@fcps.edu .  Students will need to provide clear documentation by either an electronic copy or a hard copy of their vaccination card.

Exemptions – Religious and Medical

Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to religious reasons will be exempt from the requirement, but they will need to provide information to Fairfax High School.

Starting October 4, student athletes can submit the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption form to their schools.  The form must be notarized and should be submitted directly to the Student Activities Office at Fairfax High School, (Attention: Nancy Melnick, Director of Student Activities Office, Fairfax HS, 3501 Lion Run, Fairfax, VA 22030).

Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented health or medical reasons will be exempt from the requirement, but they will need to provide information to Fairfax HS.

Starting October 4, student athletes can submit the medical exemption information to Fairfax HS.  They will need to provide documentation of a medical exemption from their physician. Students can do this through a letter from their doctor (on the doctor’s office letterhead) stating the student has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented religious or medical reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test weekly.

The Deadline for submitting religious or medical exemptions for the Winter Season is Monday, November 1.  The exemption must be received by the November 1 deadline for students to participate in winter tryouts.  This will allow enough time for those students with a medical exemption to provide proof of their negative COVID-19 test that week so that they may participate in tryouts.  As a reminder all students with an exemption for receiving the COVID-19 vaccination must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test weekly.

A student is considered fully vaccinated if two weeks have passed since their last COVID-19 shot. However, as long as they have had their second shot by November 8 they may participate.

If you have any questions, please email me at NAMelnick@fcps.edu.
