October 2021 Newsletter - Fall Highlights, Health and Safety Updates, Indigenous People's Day & more!!

Dear Sully District Families,

Fall is in the air. The nights are getting longer, the days are getting shorter, and it's getting much cooler. We are already in our second month of SY21-22 and our teachers and staff have done a stellar job transitioning our students to in-person instruction under very difficult circumstances.

Much was accomplished last month with COVID-19 safety for students and staff being our top priority. At our September work session and regular meetings, the School Board continued to emphasize health and safety measures and streamlining our protocols and procedures to support students who are home due to a COVID-related pause, quarantine, or isolation. I voted for a transportation salary scale increase to help us continue to address the shortage of bus drivers impacting school districts nationwide. The Board also voted and discussed ESSER III follow-on motions and the Comprehensive Special Education Review – First Year among other important Board matters.

While we continue to face challenges, we are in week 7 and have had many joyful experiences. I enjoyed visiting schools and participating in Back to School Nights and other student events!  At-Large School Board Member, Karen Keys-Gamarra, and me hosted a virtual town hall to address important questions and concerns you had. I met with several of our community members and families and continue to strongly advocate for expanded, scalable virtual opportunities for our students, especially for our elementary school students. Our school leaders are focused on addressing learning delays associated with the pandemic and addressing achievement gaps. We know that student success depends on a shared partnership between school, parents, and the community. This year it is especially important for all of us to work together.

Looking forward, we have another busy month planned with a Work session on October 19th where we will be discussing plans for vaccinations and other health and operational updates, as well a Legislative Work session and Public Hearing on October 25th.

Inside this month’s newsletter:

  • COVID-19 Health and Safety Updates
  • Improved Fairfax County SAT outcomes and Record Graduation Rates
  • Opening of School Report
  • Open Positions on Citizen and Curriculum Advisory Committees
  • Get2Green Outdoor Learning Initiatives
  • Parent & Mental Health Resources

Congratulations to our 2022 National Merit Semifinalists and other students who have done well and continue to excel. Our students have outperformed on the SAT and in graduation rates in 2021!

On October 11, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day to celebrate and honor Native American cultures and histories, while acknowledging their resilience in the face of a long history of marginalization. LGBTQ+ History Month is in October as well, and we will be celebrating the history and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community. October also kicks off Dyslexia Awareness month, an annual event aimed to further understanding of dyslexia. I will be reading a resolution at our Oct 7th Board meeting to recognize this event.

I was also honored to have had the opportunity to surprise and congratulate Bryant High School’s Mr. Howard Brewer who the 2022 Virginia Region 4 Teacher of the Year in person. We have incredible educators at FCPS!

Finally, please continue to share your concerns and experiences with me. These issues are my top priority and continue to be at the forefront of our daily operations. Happy Fall as well! I hope you and your family can take some time to relax and enjoy this wonderful time of year here in Fairfax.

School Visit to Deer Park ES - Lunch Safety!

deerpark

Thank you Principal D'Amato for allowing me to visit and volunteer during lunch time!! It was really amazing to see all the creative solutions that have been used from plexiglass separators, extended lunch hours, air filters, staggered lunch times, additional staff on hand etc. to help keep students safe during lunch. I am deeply grateful to teachers and staff for their incredible efforts to welcome students safely back into our schools.

Many of our schools are looking to hire hourly staff and substitute teachers to support the student learning experience. Please consider joining the FCPS team.

Now Accepting Proof of Vaccination for Athletics

vaccine

Beginning November 8, Fairfax County Public Schools requires student-athletes be vaccinated against COVID-19 for the winter and spring sports seasons as an additional safety measure. Starting October 4, student athletes can submit their proof of Covid-19 vaccination to their schools. Students will need to either:

  • Show their vaccination cards to authorized school personnel.
  • Submit their medical or religious exemption form to their schools.

Anyone granted an exemption for medical or religious reasons will be required to submit a negative test result each week. The test will need to be either a rapid test or a PCR test. Please be aware that home testing using over the counter testing products will not be accepted.

For questions about how to submit your child’s vaccination status, please look out for information in your school newsletter.

More information about the athletics vaccination requirement is available online

Updated Virginia COVID-19 Close Contact Definition and K-12 Indoor/Outdoor Classroom Exception

The state of Virginia has updated the definition of a close contact for COVID-19 and provided a K-12 classroom close contact exception.

If a COVID positive individual was on-site during their infectious period, the following individuals will be paused from in-person instruction until notified by FCPS that they can resume in-person activities:

  • Students who were within 6 feet or less of a Staff Case for a cumulative amount of 15 minutes or more within 24 hours.
  • Students wearing masks who were within 3 feet or less of a Student Case in the indoor or outdoor K-12 setting for a cumulative amount of 15 minutes or more within 24 hours.

Indoor/Outdoor Classroom Exception

In the K-12 indoor/outdoor classroom setting, the close contact definition excludes students who were within 3 to 6 feet of an infected student (laboratory-confirmed or a clinically compatible illness) if both the infected student and the exposed student(s) wore well-fitting masks the entire time.

Note: The inclusion of “outdoor” in the K-12 Exception was made at the state level (Virginia Department of Health). The federal exception continues to include only indoor settings. More information is available online.

To know what to anticipate if your child is impacted by a COVID-19 exposure and placed on pause or quarantine, see an updated guide to the return to school process on our website.

Concerns About Mask Compliance

Everyone should follow current FCPS mask requirements, unless specifically approved for an exemption, to keep our schools safe places for in-person learning. If you have concerns about mask compliance, speak with your principal or program manager.

If you feel your concerns have not been resolved, families and staff may reach out to the Region Office or make a confidential report to the Office of the Ombudsman by calling 571-423-4014, emailing ombudsman@fcps.edu, or submitting a question on the Ombudsman webpage.

Students who have concerns are encouraged to share with a teacher, assistant principal, or other trusted adult in the building. Students may also contact the Office of the Ombudsman.

Outdoor Learning Boosts Academic Achievement & Reduces Stress!

Get2green

Check out Get2Green’s updated Guidance for Using Outdoor Spaces for ideas, tips, and resources to support you in using your school’s outdoor spaces as we start the new school year. Outdoor learning is taking place in (or outside of) most FCPS schools. Over 80 schools have a wildlife habitat on their grounds, and over 75 have an edible garden. FCPS students are working in schoolyard wildlife habitats, growing food in edible gardens, and writing in their outdoor classrooms. I am a strong advocate for this and have asked staff to look at ways to increase the outdoor learning opportunities to re-engage and refocus our students in the joys of learning especially after the year we’ve had!

FCPS Get2Green is the environmental stewardship program for Fairfax County Public Schools. The website is an amazing resource to engage in environmental stewardship projects at your school, incorporate sustainability in the classroom, find your school's energy and recycling data, and learn more about green initiatives in FCPS.
