Message from the Principal

Dear Wolftrap community,

Thank you so much, again, for your warm welcome, as I “officially” assumed the role of Principal on October 1st. Ms. Lisa O’Donovan also joined us on that day, as our Assistant Principal, and many of you were able to greet her in the Kiss and Ride line and at the busses. We are excited and eager to begin our work together supporting teachers and families at Wolftrap.

Also, many thanks to our PTA for their work on Wolftrap Under the Stars. It was a wonderful time to gather and celebrate our community. We had many staff greeting students and families, and I appreciate their dedication and time that evening. Many of your children signed a beautiful mat that framed a photo for my office, and it now hangs as a reminder of all our amazing students.

Information Regarding the Care Room

With cold and flu season upon us, your child may be sent home from the care room after presenting COVID-like symptoms. We all want them back in the classroom as soon as they are well. Starting Monday, October 4, the Return to School form is no longer needed, we will follow the following guidelines.

Students may return to school when their symptoms have improved and they have not had a fever without fever-reducing medications for at least 24 hours, AND have at least one of the following:

Proof of a Negative COVID-19 Test:

  • PCR (test result from lab or physician)
  • Rapid (test result from lab or physician)
  • Home Test (picture of negative home test AND note from parent attesting the result is for the specific child and to the date the test was administered)

OR

Physician’s Note

Note from a healthcare provider following a clinical evaluation stating the cause of symptoms is not COVID-19 and clearing the child to return to school.

Please note, if your child has been identified as a potential close contact or close contact to a positive case, your child will follow the guidance provided by the health department to be cleared to return to school.

If you have any questions about this new process, or how to navigate your child’s return to school, please call the Wolftrap office or clinic. Ms. Sharon Wolf can provide information as needed.

Responding to Recent Social Media Content

As we settle into the school year, we love seeing kids engaging with each other and having fun. However, we also must be aware of the influence social media has over our students, especially trends and challenges that may lead students to misbehave in ways that could have serious consequences. There have been recent Tik Tok challenges of this sort circulating through Social Media.

I ask you to talk with your child about their social media use and remind them that activities that cause damage to a person or property have serious consequences. You may want to review the Student Rights and Responsibilities with your child, so they understand the expectations for behavior at school.

I appreciate your continued support as we work together to make this year a great one for all students.

Schoology Updates

It recently came to our attention that Schoology is not pushing out email updates to families when teachers update their classroom news feeds. We are working on a possible solution to this situation, but please note that teachers are updating student Schoology accounts with information weekly. Having your student log into the account will allow you to see the information posted. Please reach out your child’s teacher if you have more questions.

Pausing Instruction

I wanted to provide some clarification on the process for pausing instruction. A pause to in-person instruction is a short-term safety measure used by FCPS and the health department to allow time to investigate and determine the safest way to address a positive case within the school community. The health department clears students to come back to school, not the Wolftrap office. A student’s instruction might be paused due to close contact with a COVID-19 positive individual. A close contact is any person, regardless of vaccination status, who is within 6 feet of a COVID-19 positive individual for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) K-12 Exception indicates that students will not be identified as close contacts if they are at least 3 feet apart and are consistently wearing masks in the classroom setting. Adults are not included in this exception.

When we find out that we have a positive case, we identify any close contacts on that day. Information regarding positive cases schoolwide will be sent on Friday of each week. This information was originally sent to families via the FCPS e-news on September 3rd. See the September 8th FCPS newsletter that contained the information about the weekly updates, provided to the community. https://www.fcps.edu/blog/fcps-week-e-newsletter-september-8-2021.

Please remember that teachers will receive the pause information on the same day as our families, and it takes them time to assemble assignments and information for you. As always, please call our office, if we can provide any more information.

Thank you for your continued support!

Warmly,

Dr. Maggie Grove

Principal
