Welcome to Kilmer MS Vania Espichan

A message from Principal, Amy Miller

Dear Kilmer Families,

We are certainly having beautiful weather as we welcome the start of October! Now that we are about half way through the first quarter this is a nice time to reflect with your student on what is going well for them so far this year in school.

I would like to introduce Vania Espichan to the Kilmer Community as our Family Liaison. Ms. Espichan works as a Family Liaison at Kilmer MS and at Freedom Hill ES. As a Family Liaison she works to connect families and parents with staff, support, and resources at school and in our community. You can reach out to Ms. Espichan through email at vpespichan@fcps.edu or at 703-846-8803. Click here to learn more about the Family Liaison role.

Enjoy the weekend!

Sincerely,

Amy Miller, Principal

Kilmer’s NJHS

Incorporating Service Learning Into Education

Kilmer’s National Junior Honor Society will begin again soon, with Candidate Invitations/Forms and Parent Letters emailed to student and parent accounts the week of October 4. Requirements to become an NJHS candidate are as follows:

  1. The candidate must be a member of the 8th grade class.
  2. The candidate must have been in attendance at Kilmer Middle School since at least September.
  3. The candidate must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.7, as of June, 2021.
  4. Electronic receipt of the completed Candidate Form, with signatures, by the deadline, October 28.

Kilmer Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society focuses on Service Learning, using the model presented by FCPS Service Learning and The Complete Guide to Service Learning manual by Cathryn Berger Kaye, M.A.

To realize the five components of NJHS: Citizenship, Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service, Kilmer’s NJHS uses a guided research-based learning method to help students address an authentic community need. Student initiative and structured time for reflection on the service experience are key elements. Students finish the year able to demonstrate their acquired skills and knowledge in a Service Learning Gallery, and subsequent Induction into the National Junior Honor Society.

NJHS has made accommodations to our service learning process to reflect FCPS Operational Metrics and guidelines.

Cougars are proud to continue our tradition of service learning at Kilmer MS. NJHS is ready to Make A Difference!

Student Rights and Responsibilities Parent Signature

Thank you to all parents who have been able to sign the SR&R; we are still missing many signatures.

FCPS’ updated Student Rights & Responsibility booklet is now available online and in the ParentVue section of the Student Information System (SIS). The SR&R booklet explains expectations for student behavior, and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment.

Each year, we ask parents to review, sign, and return the SR&R to their child’s school. In ParentVue, you may now download and digitally sign the SR&R. Every parent/guardian with a ParentVUE account will see the SR&R upon login to ParentVUE until the SR&R acknowledgement has been completed.

Once you log on, you will see the following message:

Your name in the digital signature box must match the parent/guardian’s first and last name in SIS exactly before the signature will be accepted.

Please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures are due by October 29, 2021.
