Dear Eagle Families,

Happy First Friday of October! We had a busy week at KJMS, and your students rose to the occasion. Thank you to all of them and our staff for an awesome testing week with the new Virginia Growth Assessments. We are so glad that nearly EVERY student comes to school with a fully charged laptop and charger every day, especially on testing days. Thank you! Please check with your student to ask if they also have earbuds/headphones that they bring to school everyday. We ask that all students bring earbuds/headphones with a cord that can plug directly into their school computer. We ask that they not use bluetooth devices like AirPods since they can be connected to other devices. No need to buy Beats or expensive earphones, there are cheap options at Target and other discount stores.

This week, we also were able to participate in a surprise reunion for one of our 8th graders, Alex Hercules. Alex’ brother, Kevin Mejia, is an active duty Marine who was most recently in Twentynine Palms, California. Unbeknownst to Alex, Kevin came home this Thursday morning while Alex was here at school. We got to witness a very sweet reunion with a surprise lunch visit from his brother, mom and sister. Kevin is a Fairfax County Public School graduate from Falls Church High School. We would like to thank him for his service. Above are a couple of pictures for you to enjoy the moment with us.

Enjoy this wonderful weekend with Fairfax High School and their Homecoming events!

Dr. Tammy Silipigni, Principal

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) commits to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning (SEL). All schools will be conducting an SEL Screener in October. FCPS staff will use the screener to identify strengths and needs for students in grades K-12. The screener provides information regarding students’ experiences and how staff can support their needs.

More information, including a short video about the SEL screener in FCPS and the screener questions, can be found on the SEL Screener webpage ).

Katherine Johnson Middle School will administer the Fall SEL Screener on October 14th, 2021 through the student’s TA period. You can view the full text of the SEL Screener questions by clicking on this link.

If you do not want your student to take part in the SEL screener, please fill out this google form. Translation of this letter and the Opt Out Form is available by clicking here. Please contact your student’s school counselor or school's test coordinator if you have any questions. Thank you.

Student Rights and Responsibilities Parent Signature Sheet

Students recently participated in Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) presentations and activities. An important part of the SR&R process is the partnership Katherine Johnson has with its parents and guardians through the completion of the SR&R Parent Signature sheet as acknowledgement of receiving the SR&R handbook electronically. Parents and guardians can acknowledge receipt of the SR&R in ParentVue in your child’s SIS account or sign the hard copy Parent Signature Sheet to acknowledge that you have received this document. Please e-sign through ParentVue or return the signed signature sheet to your child's school by October 29, 2021.
