Bonnie Brae Updates October 1

Bonnie Brae Friday Updates

News from the administration

Dear Wonderful Bonnie Brae Families,

Our students and staff are in a great groove as we begin October with some beautiful weather outside and engaging learning opportunities at BBES. One of the experiences we would like to highlight is Morning Meeting which is an engaging way each student at Bonnie Brae starts their day. The purpose of Morning Meeting is to set children up for success each day socially and emotionally. Each morning meeting includes a greeting, share, activity and morning message. Many staff are also looking for opportunities to align components of Positivity Project as part of morning meeting as well.

We also want to take a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication each of our staff members have put in this year. They have been working hard to connect with students, plan engaging lessons and collaborate with one another all while navigating evolving health and safety protocols. If you would like to acknowledge a BBES staff member, we invite you to submit your story through FCPS Cares. We also want to acknowledge all the support families are providing as well to our students and staff. We are grateful to have such dedicated families as partners in their child's education.

Sincerely,

Dwayne Young-Interim Principal

COVID Weekly Update

Every week, we will provide an update on our COVID-19 status to keep you informed. Parents interested in following the daily case reporting can refer to the COVID-19 Dashboard on the FCPS website. If you have any questions about how we are staying safe so we can keep learning in person, please contact the BBES office at 703-321-3900.

Bonnie Brae reports 3 positive COVID-19 cases this week. 3 are students and 0 are staff.

12 students and staff are learning and teaching remotely while in a pause, quarantine, or isolation.

Remember, do your part to keep our school safe: Wear your mask, get vaccinated if you are eligible, practice healthy hygiene, and stay home when you are sick.

Positivity Project

Positivity Project

We continue to work to empower students to build positive relationships through the Positivity Project. Next week's focus is Being Present- Other People Mindset

Being Present and Giving Others My Attention means that when I’m with other people, I’m present and give them my full attention. Just like plants need sunlight to grow, our relationships need attention. If we don’t give our attention to the people we’re building relationships with – whether family members, close friends, or even distant colleagues – we can’t build those relationships. It’s vitally important that we pick our heads up from our cell phones and truly listen to other people when they’re talking. A positive culture is built with positive relationships – and we can’t build positive relationships without attention.

Face Masks

Universal face masks continue to be one of our primary mitigation strategies. Our students have been wonderful in following this protocol, and they have noticed that they might require a change of mask throughout the day. We ask that students bring 1-2 extra masks as a precaution.

What’s the StreamIN/CheckIN Experience Like?

StreamIN/CheckIN, a way for students being paused, quarantined, or isolated due to COVID-19 to learn directly from their teachers, began Monday, September 27. Curious about what the experience is like for teachers and students? Check out this brief video

Learn more about StreamIN/CheckIN on the FCPS website.

Hispanic Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is acknowledged annually from September 15-October 15. The celebration was created to honor the rich history, culture, and many contributions of Hispanic Americans. Learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month.

Librarian's Message

At the beginning of this school year, all FCPS student library accounts were cleared so that children could return to school with a clean slate. No fines will be charged for books lost or damaged during the Covid-19 pandemic. Bonnie Brae ES is proud to announce that we have received a Federal grant to replace library print materials lost during that time. These funds are in addition to our regular annual library budget. Our librarian, Lora Lewis, placed our school’s order on September 28th, and we expect the books to arrive before Winter Break. Over 200 books will be replaced or updated including nonfiction, graphic novels, picture books, fairytales, and more!

FLE Parent Preview Save the Date

Oak View will be hosting the 2021-22 Robinson Pyramid's virtual presentation of the Family Life Education Parent (FLE) preview on October 18th from 6:00pm-7:00pm for interested families. Additional details regarding how to access the virtual presentation will be shared closer to the date.

Go Paperless- Feature on ParentVue

ParentVue now has the option to go paperless. This might include paperless options such as progress reports and report cards. You can opt to "Go Paperless" for Secondary Report Cards and Elementary Progress Reports by clicking the checkbox just under your account details in Parent Vue.

Need to Adjust How Your Child Goes Home?

A friendly reminder that if you need to pick up your child early from school, please support our school's dismissal procedures by picking them up by 2:45pm and submitting the early dismissal form. This would help avoid possible confusion for your child during dismissal time and ensure that your child gets to the correct location at dismissal.

Similarly, if there is a different way that your child will be going home, please submit the transportation change form to notify our front office. To ensure that your child safely gets to their new dismissal destination, we ask that you submit this form first thing in the morning or by 2pm.

Bus Loop Safety

FCPS continues to monitor the safety of staff, students, and community. Part of that safety includes physical safety in the bus loops. At the end of the day, when buses are arriving to pick up students in the afternoon, there have been reported safety concerns of families and students crossing through the bus loop. Please continue to use the sidewalks to ensure safety of staff, students, community, and bus drivers.

Sub and Save the Day!

Like many school districts across the region and country, FCPS is looking for kind and caring substitute teachers to ensure our students continue to thrive when teachers need to be out of the building.

Substitute teaching is a great opportunity for stay-at-home parents, retirees, college students, and anyone who wants a flexible work schedule.

FCPS Cares

FCPS Cares

The FCPS Cares Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can acknowledge our Bonnie Brae staff members.
