Dear Fairfax,

As we end the fifth week of school it appears that fall has finally decided to make an appearance. These sunny, slightly crisp days are my favorite! We are looking forward to the many Homecoming events scheduled for next week. Events include the  Homecoming Court Assembly on Monday, outdoor pep rally, parade, tailgate and football game on Friday and the Homecoming Dance on Saturday. Students are encouraged to participate in each of the Spirit Days. The theme for each day is listed below:

Monday:  Cowboys vs. Aliens **No Hats**

Tuesday:  Neon Day

Wednesday:  Parallel Universe (twin day)

Thursday:  Space Jam (Jersey Day)

Friday:  Class Colors

Seniors: Black  Juniors: Grey  Sophomores:Blue  Freshman:White

In addition to the Homecoming events, the Activities Office is sponsoring an Activities Fair during Lion Time on Wednesday, September 29. All students will have the opportunity to explore the many clubs and activities we offer at FHS.

Our student athletes had a great week with our 10-0 Field Hockey defeating West Springfield and WTW, the golf team beat Alexandria City High School 190-148, the volleyball program swept South County, and finally our JV football team got the win over the Alexandria Titans 34-28 with 5 seconds on the clock! A special good luck to our Cross Country runners at the Braddock Relays tomorrow and our Golfers as they start District play on Tuesday!

At this point in the quarter, students have begun to receive their first unit assessments and may be disappointed in the grades they have earned. Faculty and staff are working hard to utilize the data from these assessments to create supports and resources for students. As you are having conversations with your child and they are expressing frustration, it is important to encourage them to reach out for help and work with their teacher to develop a plan to be successful in the class.  As a reminder we have two late bus days and beginning the week of October 4 students will have an opportunity to meet with teachers during Lion Time.

Wishing you a wonderful and restful weekend,

Maureen

Message from the Attendance Office

Students needing to check out early

When students need to check out from school we must receive written documentation from the parent or guardian.  We are not permitted to accept phone calls. The written permission may come in the form of a handwritten note or by completing the on-line attendance form found at https://fairfaxhs.fcps.edu/about/attendance-form  for a partial day absence.  When providing either documentation, please specify the time the student needs to be dismissed. Additionally, if a parent or guardian walks in to check out their student, please know that we will work to fulfill the request, but it will take time for us to locate the student’s class, and get the student to the attendance office for check out.

Pre-arranged Absences

When families know that students will be absent for multiple days for events such as weddings, funerals, college, visits, etc. we need the student to complete the pre-arranged absence form. https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/forms/se289.pdf  This form should be completed and returned to the student’s sub-school for administrator approval.

SGA Leadership is in search of Volunteers

The SGA desperately needs your help to make next week's Homecoming festivities fantastic! We need adult volunteers to help monitor intersections during the parade on Oct 1st and we need dance chaperones/ticket takers. We can place you in a location where your students will never, ever see you (or we can place you front and center, your pick!). Please consider helping us with an hour or two of your time! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080b45abaa2ca2fa7-homecoming5

Winter & Spring Sport Info

Beginning November 8, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) requires student-athletes be vaccinated against COVID-19 for the winter and spring sports seasons as an additional safety measure to support our layered prevention strategies. An increase in positive COVID-19 cases in sports programs results in large numbers of students being paused from athletic participation and, more importantly, classroom instruction.

Vaccination Requirement

Students who are 16 years of age or older (age as of November 8 for Winter Season) who are unvaccinated and do not have either a medical or religious exemption will not be able to participate in team activities.  In addition, unvaccinated students who are 12 -15 years of age who do not provide a weekly negative Covid-19 test will not able to participate in team activities. Currently FCPS is working on securing a vendor to assist with providing access to weekly testing for athletes.  We will share more information as it becomes available.

Submitting Proof of Vaccination

Starting October 4, student athletes can submit their proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the Fairfax High School Athletic Training Office, attention Amanda Johnston, AEJohnston@fcps.edu .  Students will need to provide clear documentation by either an electronic copy or a hard copy of their vaccination card.

Exemptions – Religious and Medical

Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to religious reasons will be exempt from the requirement, but they will need to provide information to Fairfax High School.

Starting October 4, student athletes can submit the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption form to their schools.  The form must be notarized and should be submitted directly to the Student Activities Office at Fairfax High School, (Attention: Nancy Melnick, Director of Student Activities Office, Fairfax HS, 3501 Lion Run, Fairfax, VA 22030).

Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented health or medical reasons will be exempt from the requirement, but they will need to provide information to Fairfax HS.

Starting October 4, student athletes can submit the medical exemption information to Fairfax HS.  They will need to provide documentation of a medical exemption from their physician. Students can do this through a letter from their doctor (on the doctor’s office letterhead) stating the student has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Students who are not receiving the COVID-19 vaccine due to documented religious or medical reasons will be required to submit a negative COVID-19 test weekly.

The Deadline for submitting religious or medical exemptions for the Winter Season is Monday, November 1.  The exemption must be received by the November 1 deadline for students to participate in winter tryouts.  This will allow enough time for those students with a medical exemption to provide proof of their negative COVID-19 test that week so that they may participate in tryouts.  As a reminder all students with an exemption for receiving the COVID-19 vaccination must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test weekly.

A student is considered fully vaccinated if two weeks have passed since their last COVID-19 shot. However, as long as they have had their second shot by November 8 they may participate.

If you have any questions, please email me at NAMelnick@fcps.edu.
